Labour councillor speaks against tax break

YorkPress: End tax break for buy-to-let

Sounds like public support for scrapping the BTL tax break may be growing. Agree, one councillor in York isnt much. But how can one catalyze that? Online petitions, polls? What can we do from this site? Any idea?

I think the road pricing petition and olympic logo petitions have proved that those online petitions are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

More direct action is needed, but it is against your nature to do so. People who do not take direct action end up as losers; they don't have good jobs, they are unhealthy, they have little money, etc which is why such people are found on forums like this.

Basically, if you had what it takes to get things done, you would not be here in the first place. I come here for my own amusement just as my rich friend from Alderely Edge reads the Coppers Blog to see how the underclass riff-raff live.
Losers of every generation blame the government. Even when house prices fall for you, there will be other life obstacles out there, and then maybe you will go to another forum that addresses this other problem.

I think this is the flavour of the day. Tax benifit on BTL or investment properties.
I think for people like me who can't get on the housing ladder, should not rely on this (tax benifit) to be removed as this is not going to happen.

But remember this did used to happen before the labour govt. Remember that next time you have elections.

I've seen the Downing Street petitions. There is one bloke who has started a petition AGAINST the imposition of a Tax based on 1% of a house's actual value. I meant to start a second petition argueing FOR the 1% Tax but apathy got hold of me. Maybe I will ...

If the 1% tax goes think what will happen it will get cheaper for not only first time buyers but also BTL'ers.
Because they buy the same properties as first time buyers. Idea being buy the same and then rent them out to First time buyers at extortionate rates.

Maybe saying buying house for Owner Occupation gets a rebate and BTL pay 2-3%. Atleast then there will be some social benifit.

My colourful comments that people would enjoy arguing for/against are being sensored on this site and yet the boring comments about k-winters, gold and foreign currency get shown. This site has become really boring in the past month.

Well said Scott...sheeple expect governments to solve the problem - we need more personal responsibility taught in schools. Of course all the old fashioned ways are laughed at: scouts, national service etc...

Scott,

I think its a little early to be calling the winners and losers yet scott. The game is only just starting after all. Why do you assume that none of us are involved in direct action? And, how do you know what outcome we are fighting for? A very narrow view would focus on house prices only I suppose, but know what assumption is the Mother of?

The current taxation of owner occupiers vs BTL landlords is a fairly level playing field at present, indeed the BTLers are at a disadvantage when they sell, because they have to pay capital gains tax on capital growth, whilst owner occupiers (in their principal residence, if they have more than one) don't.

But there is an argument for preventing landlords from offsetting the rent they receive (which is already tax paid money) against their interest payments.

This argument has suddenly come from nowhere to considerable media prominance just as one G. Brown has taken the helm. Is he trying to get public support for another 'stealth' tax?

It would torpedo the BTL market if it was introduced, and precipitate a housing market crash at about the same time that Brown is probably planning to call an election.

Could 'the great strategist' be so foolish?

Webmaster - I hope scott is not being censored unless his comments are truly derogatory and unnecessary.

His first comment on this thread was a reasonable point. A little off the mark IMO, but we are often accused of being a bunch of perpetual whingers.

Maybe if his apparently censored comments are revealed on a seperate thread we could discuss whether it should be censored?

Thank you Inbreda. My comments are never derogatory or unnecessary. At times my comments can be what some people would consider rather extreme but it all adds to the flavour and energy of the debate.

For example, I have hailed communism in the past because I believe the state will own everything and allocate houses according to people's usefulness; police, nurses and other exploited professions would not struggle under this system. Instead, we have unskilled useless people who are mega-rich just because their parents handed down 5+ houses.

I have also encouraged support for the far right parties, not because I am a nazi (remember I also encouraged communism) but because the government fear far right support more than they fear Al-Qaeda and if parties like the BNP gained powerful support by ever-increasing masses of young people who just want a home of their own the government would be forced to address the problem.

Scott, you're rather like a bloke who, say, goes to the pub and spends all day telling the other regulars how sad they are spending all day in the pub when they could be more like him. Do you see?
