One in seven children are growing up homeless or badly housed
Firstrung: Blair's legacy is housing crisis, says Shelter
Responding to the resignation of Prime Minister Tony Blair, Shelter chief executive Adam Sampson said: "Tony Blair succeeded in bringing down the number of people forced to sleep rough, but this is just the tip of Britain's bad housing iceberg. He leaves his post with 89,500 homeless households living in temporary accommodation in England, double the number in 1997.

It's not Blair's fault. He cannot stop all those chav scumbags from having unwanted children. We prize chav celebrities, our society is a disgrace, and the offspring are paying the price.

What about requiring BTL'rs to let a proportion of their portfolios to those in temporary accommodation. The government could pay them a set rate. That would free up a few properties for FTB :)

Those who believe that Nu- Labour are in anyway 'socialist' should consider such statistics.
Even the State Capitalists of the Soviet Union used the homelessness in capitalist Nations for propaganda purposes. Homelessness does not occur in genuinely Socialist States. It is a desease of Capitalist societies, and for quite obvious reasons.
New Labour could, perhaps with justification, be compared to Soviet State Capitalists , but should absolutely not be considered 'Socialist' in any form.
It would be a triumph indeed for these fools if they were able to blame the many inherrent failures in our capitalist system, upon the mantle of those who oppose the system most vigourously, whether right or wrong in doing so.
Whatever ones political view, I think that a clear and accurate portrayal of just what/who it is that the lib/lab/ con actually represent has never been more necessary for our democracy.

Surely this is reflected in the increase of immigrants to the country?

I have to say that this government must take some responsibility for the house price inflation which is destroying the fabric of society. I think there will be riots and massive social problems if we dont have a correction of atleast 25% in prices.
Housing is a important basic needs for all classes of society. I guess part of the problem in this country is that there is no saving culture in many many english families. I thank my Indian culture for instilling the value of saving and acruing wealth. I in turn am doing this with my children. I try to save between 25-50% of my net montly salary and invest it in ISAs and Bonds and today my money is growing at an impressive rate. If more prople in the Uk did this it would contract M4 ie the money supply which would also have the side affect of controlling house price inflation.
I cannot believe the debt culture we live in today and once again the govtmust take some blame for this through relaxed lending practises and not tighter credit regulation. Why do people need to take 3 foreign holidays on plastic ?! oh is it because they deserve it for being so sensible ( with money ?!) Get real and live within your means and have one holiday which you have saved for.
