Desperate..

Firstrung: Can the emergence of first time buyer 'BARBIES' (Buying Abroad, Renting in Britain) be taken seriously?

We should thank Hiscox for finally labelling the birth of the illusory group of first time buyers - who supposedly buy abroad due to the fact they are priced out of the UK. Certain media sources have been desperately trying to peddle this myth and having finally tagged the buyer with the name 'Barbie' they have done the overall concept proud...

The market in the UK has peaked and this stinking VI wretch is just trying to plug an imaginary untapped market. Houses are cheaper in Europe because there are no jobs to speak of. That's why hundreds of thousands of French 20 somethings pour into London each year.

These idiots also don't take into account the very real animosity aimed at Brit's pushing up prices in continental Europe and pricing out the local youth. Don't be surprised to see a violent backlash, especially from the French.

Desperate indeed!

I find the French response that the British are pushing up French houses prices hypocritical in the extreme when more French nationals live in the UK than Brits in France.

In a way it kind of makes sense. You can pick up a flight from France to the UK for about £40. Rent in the UK while returning to France or another EU country for a long weekend. House prices are much cheaper in the rest of the EU.

£80 every week or two weeks is hardly a lot for commuting.

It would also allow rampant house price inflation to spread to the rest of Europe. Germany has had static prices for the past couple of years and it suspected that their property is significantly undervalued.

Yes but Steve the French are coming here to make a living whereas the majority of Brits moving to France go with a wheel-barrows full of money and the notion of living a Marie Antoinette lifestyle in a rural French Idyll. They also tend to be older and therefore contribute less in taxes and consume more in healthcare.

It is hardly surprising though if Brits did commute back and rented here in the UK. It is just becoming increasing easier to live abroad and the UK is a very very expensive place to buy a house now with no real sign of any sort of slowdown.

err - this idea that your home should be a place where you visit once maybe twice a month on a bargain flight is really imaginitive. I think the long term costs of staying in hotels are cheaper than buying a house for the purpose, and more flexible.

Unless they're doing it to rent out to others, but I'd have thought the locals would have a business advantage in this, but perhaps lack of capital.

That's a bit more like it, monty.

Now all that's left to be done is to convince the world that this group exists!

Hang on.

How about the Welsh and Scottish, and those living in the Channel Islands?

Will they come BARBIWES and BARBISES and BARBITCI? Or should we have a term to encompass all like "BARBIESWATCI" to mean:

Buying Abroad, Renting Back in England, Scotland, Wales And The Channel Islands

This demographic group is already as rare as hens' teeth, so we don't want to miss anyone out.
