Good idea.

I suggest that MP's and senior civil servants start the ball rolling.

They tried this in a Liverpool overspill estate in St Helens, the net result was that the local druggies who ended up living there only had to cross the road or jump over their back fence to rob stuff. I'm sure the 'high earners' will twig this and avoid buying anywhere near such schemes. A sad fact of life but true.

More attempts at social engineering by the big-brother state. I wonder how upset they are that so many of us just won't conform. Have they not learnt anything from previous attempts at forcing racial integration and the subsequent "white-flight". I sometimes wonder how much common-sense these political strategists have, or is it just that they have never lived in the real world.

What they really mean is get rid of all the poor by one way or another and the more affluent can move in, just think, another boom with all that L A ( to borrow an estate agents term) housing appearing on the market.

I have no problem living with poor people. I have a real problem living with drug addicts, criminals and thugs who have no respect for anybody. At the moment the only people that live in such conditions are those that cannot afford a way out and for them I truly sympathise. What high earner is going to put their hard earned dosh to live in such an area? Why should effing druggies get housing at all.

Good way of bringing down the cost of new builds.

Spot on enuii and Uncle Chris

Crap idea - nobody "nice" would want to live there (including the middle class political strategists). The larger houses would end up full of immigrants put there by the council and rapidly fall to rack and ruin.

You cannot perform social engineering of this kind. By the way guys, In my area the drug addicts, social misfits and thiefs all seem to predominate in the upper working and middle classes. The poor know this, but always get the blame. Take your bloody blinkers off for a once and stop being so judgemental.

I am poor, there is no way I want to be living next to Mr BMW, his frigid wife and two selfish ill brought up brats. I want to live with honest people. Of course, first I would have to be able to buy a fekin house, but my new afluent (or should that be efluent) neighbours have put the nail in the coffin with their selfish avarice!

maybe we should pass a law that we all give away 20% of our salary to poor people on the street - that would be a great idea too!

I agree, things are looking grim. I saw an old cottage for sale on a welsh hill, in the middle of nowhere last week. The cottage has no windows, no running water (so no drainage), no electricity and no gas. 20 grand, sold as seen. I could manage with that if I sorted out a source of water and a septic tank. No electricity, so no media to invade my head. No gas bills to worry about, just a nice cozy fire in the evening, my guitar, a good book and a nice bottle of bourbon. Oh, and there is no mobile phone coverage there either.... If anyone is interested its in Gwynedd, just outside a small village called Botwnogg.

George - also consider moving abroad, plenty of stuff around at very low prices. Some friends of mine have recently thrown the towel in and are going. Just had enough and can't blame them one bit. UK seems to be bottom or worst on just about every social ranking now. Highest divorce rate, worst place to bring up kids in developed world, highest prison population, most in debt population, high levels of crime. Something has clearly gone wrong when it could have all been the opposite.

This sounds like another 'redistribution of wealth' idea from Labour. I rent in a reasonably nice estate in Exeter and a nearby sink estate uses our area as an walk-in B&Q/Halfords! My bike was knicked from my garage just before Christmas and the same garages have been hit 3 times since. They now come armed with drills and crow bars! The local police shrugged their collective shoulders, smiled and flicked through their pension details.

In fact the only 'policing' they could manage was a phone call asking me whether I was traumatised by the incident. Mmmmm, no I just wanted my friggin' bike back!!!

Call me daft, but is there any correlation between the removal of corporal punishment by the police and an increased crime rate?

Maybe they want to increase the value of sink estates so they can re-band council tax?

Sovietuk, can you recommend anywhere to emigrate to? (I don't fancy costa-del-chav)

Does anyone else think that "raiding the barns" for short-term press-release "results" and not sowing real investment for the future is what has got us to the bottom of every league table?
(Really enjoyed yesterday's post on "whatreallyhappened.com" - the story of the farmer in the first few paragraphs rings horribly true)
