Brits are not community minded to live in these new flats
ehomesblog: Brits just can't live in these new posh apartments
Interesting blog I've found on the web - this latest entry talks about the sheer agro of managing all these new apartments where occupants don't give a damn about communal living. And these are prestigious new flats in desirable locations. As a result service charges are going through the roof to clear up the mess. BTLs take note.

yeah, I live in one of these flats. looks impressive but they're looking more and more aged, someone even nicked my amazon delivery the other day. you'd think expensive apts would mean a better class of tenent. you can take the trash out the gutter...
however I think I know why this is so, if I as a tenent do my best to foster a community spirit with those people whom i share the block with, it's becomes nice, clean, and a good place to live. ergo the value goes up. my landlord see's other flats going up in value and thinks he can up the rent above the rate of inflation. -- I think he'll regret the day he took me on as a tenent.

I agree with the article really. The British are an untidy lot (myself included) and living in flats does not suit us. In the long run, flats are an expensive form of accommodation because they cost a lot to manage and maintain properly. Also out little-Englander island mentality means we are happier in our own houses and gardens generally. Which is a pity because flats with communal open space is the most efficient way to use land from a space point of view and also minimises travelling.

Remember all those lovely flats they built in the 1960's, the same fate will happen upon a lot of the new ones built by the private sector recently only this time the landlords will not be local authorities and may well be your local money laundering ex nightclub owning gangster.

In addition to the above .... remember that the reassessment of local taxes will now depend on how "nice" an area is. Therefore there will be even less incentive to get to know your neighbours etc etc. In fact I suspect that in some "nice" areas a few burned out cars will appear while the review is going on.
