The great mortgage securitisation boom. A scandal in the making?l

underpinning thie boom in Britain's housing market is a different, more ethereal phenomenon. Increasingly, Britain's lenders are selling off residential mortgages to the capital markets – and they are doing so by the thousand.

Last year British mortgages worth more than £90bn were sold off through securitisation vehicles to investors across the globe, according to Citigroup, the banking giant. The figure has almost doubled in the past 12 months.
