Households face financial squueze in 2007

Manchester Evening News: Brits braced for a pounding

As Eastern European immigrants continue to keep the supply of labour high, wages are unlikely to keep up with the increasingly high cost of living. Allied to a potential increase in interest rates this month, people may find themselves with significantly less cash in their pockets at the end of the month.

I see a winter of discontent brewing.
It's not going to be pretty when the workers ask for their pay rise in line with (real) inflation only to be told, "no chance, we can get 3 Bulgarians for that price!".
What are they going to do? Shrug and walk away muttering because they are so endebted they can't afford to strike

Even a small amount of inflation would be a dagger through the heart of Labours economy so I fully expect to see high levels of immigration. Reid stated that numbers of Bulgarians, Romanians would be capped but the caveat to that statement is that they may be employed in agricultural type jobs and other jobs where there are shortages of labour and the biggest loophole of them all which is an addition to the above is "if they are self-employed".
No change to immigration policy then is there Labour?!

denzil,

Notice how many eastern Europeans are now in and around WSM? Just what is it that people do for a living around there anyway?

I can only think of the following.

1. Work in one of the incredible number of supermarkets serving those on benefits.
2. Work in an off-licence serving those on benefits.
3. Work in Weston general serving those on benefits.
4. Work in one of the 84 pubs and bars, serving those on benefits.
5. Work in one of the houses of hope and miracles, "Drug/Booze Rehab centres", serving those on benefits.
6. Work in one of the many half-way houses, serving those on benefits.
7. Work for the DSS serving those on benefits.
8. Work for North Somerset District Council, serving themselves (you know who you are, corrupt scumbags), and those on benefits.
9. Commute to Bristol, to do any one of the above.
10. Assemble WSM folk from randomly selected rejected body parts. HAAAHAAAA!!

I guess there's still some industry down on the Oldmixon trading estate? Perhaps there is a growing industry in the priniting of DSS Benefits Claim Forms?

If this is true then inflation and interest rates should drop next year.

Off topic, but I feel like it anyway,

A dear friend of mine is a paramedic in XXXXXX-XXXXX-XXXX. They spend most of their time collecting drunks and mugging/murder victims from the streets. The NHS recently introduced an horrifically expensive substance called 'Narcan' or something like that. It works like this.

Step 1 Ambulance called for junkie, who's not quite used enough junk to save taxpayer money, BUT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE.
Step 2 Ambulance arrives.
Step 3 Crew find said junkie.
Step 4 After ummming and aarrhhing about the morals of using Narcan, crew have to follow procedure
Step 5 Junkie pumped full of Narcan
Step 6 Junkie suddenly comes around and is alive
Step 7 Junkie tells ambulance crew to 'fcuk off' so it can 'score' again
Step 8 Ambulance crew on £19.5k a year before taxes left wondering what life is all about
Step 9 Junkie continues costing Ambulance crew and every other poor bloody taxpayer their pension so they'll have to work till they drop dead
Step 10 Round we go again

When did they stopped teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution in schools?

mjchum, you are right about the number of Eastern Europeans around W-S-M. Up until recently I thought it was the south-east that had high level of immigrants but a visit to Tesco's on a saturday morning back in Nov proved me completely wrong. After battling through the haze of cigarette smoke outside the main entrance I was staggered by the amount of non-English speakers shopping in there.
BTW. I am not against immigration so long as the party in power make plans to improve the infrastructure (housing, public transport roads etc) to accomodate the additional numbers something this government have just not even considered.

Give me a Pole over one of the useless tossers supping special brew in Grove park any day of the week.

denzil,

Agreed. Eastern Europeans (especially Poles) are more like the British used to be (normal). Employed many recently, good bunch.
