I always got the impression that Evan Davies was a paid up member of the Blair Broadcasting Commission, looks like I'm right again.

Evan Davies, pouring oil on troubled waters as usual - excuse the pun.

Evan Davies and the other economists seem happy to talk about the 2 year fiscal lag for inflation rises to take effect, but not the fiscal lag for rate drops - remember approximately 2 years runaway house price inflation was the norm.
And now the economy may be bearing the fruits of that broken window fallacy spending spree.

Delighted to see my view of Evan's 'role' is shared by fellow bloggers! The BBCs 'friendly Capitalist' is wheeled out to put a positive spin on bad news with such clockwork precision that the Beeb might just blow the whole gig.
Evan could put a non alarmist spin on ethnic genocide if required, with his 'no need to panic' smile, and 'wise man in the know' wink. I think Evan plays a vital role in educating the Nation upon just what blatant propaganda serves as News in this Country. Long may his phoney pragmatism grace our screens.
I see Colonial Governer Tony himself went with the 'inflation will recede with energy prices' yarn today. Either Tony does not understand the cause of inflation, or he is a bare faced (murdering, traitorous,Yankee hugging war criminal, ) LIAR. (or both of course!)

Has anyone else noticed that whenever the BBC has to run a bad news story like yesterdays inflation figures they always manage to get in a bit about Norman Lamont, Nigel Lawson and the Thatcher government. I just shook my head in disbelief last night when they pointed out that inflation was 4.5% under Lamont and then they smirked before telling the viewers it was 10% a year earlier under Lawson. We didn't have mountains of cheap goods from China flattering the figures then and I really don't see (other than Tory bashing) why the BBC needed to mention something that happened 15 years ago.
Absolutely blatant... I hate the BBC and feel physically sick when I have to stump up for the licence each year.

They seemed to have missed the biggest threat to inflation - pay rises - Wonder if that was accidental?!
Also, I don't see where this assumption that manufactured goods will continue getting cheaper comes from. Not long before they start demanding pay rises in China too

Did anyone see that program on excess in the city last night? Lots of yuppies boasting about owning fast cars, big houses, huge inflation busting bonuses ?
Reminded me of all those late 80's / 90's programs about yuppies boasting about owning fast cars, big houses, huge inflation busting bonuses.......before the last crash.

license fee - theft to fund inefficiency

Two questions please
1) Why is the BBC pro labour, or pro government?
2) What is wrong or missing from Evans report?
thanks

Oh yes the United Kingdom home of the free, but you license a Television or go to Jail, the country where you are subjects not citizens !
I find it all so Big Brother its appauling for the 21st century

I haven't paid the license fee since the dodgy dossier shambles and the 'resignations' that followed.
BBC is supposed to be independent. When it is, I'll pay the fee. Until then they'll just have to accept my 'positive spin' on reasons for withholding payment.

"It's done a remarkable job of delivering inflation on target so far - the average rate of inflation since 1997 has deviated from the target by a 0.1 percentage point. "
What is this clown smoking?

I absolutely agree with the comment by Tyrellcorporation
The BBC is a joke and it's disgusting having to pay a license fee to listen to their biased NuLab friendly spin on everything. There is no serious journalism on the BBC anymore. Question Time and Any Questions on R4 are freak shows. If anyone gets through to ask an awkward question, there are immediately shot down by Dimbleby. A bloody disgrace. And look what they've done to Panorama, the programme that used to have politicians quaking in their boots has been similarly debased into another form of 'light entertainment' CNUTS.

The case of whether or not to pay for your propaganda is an intriguing one, which I haven't fully appreciated yet.
On the one hand, some form of propaganda service is essential (during wartime, for controlling knee jerk responses to bad news, for creating a national psyche, for stimulating the minds of the public, for demonstrating acceptable behaviour etc.). These things are of extreme value. On the other hand, when the state slides into trouble, it can be misused. In between you have grey areas, yes it is good for the economy to prop up the housing boom with property porn, but it is a false boom and needs popping.
It tends to come down to the question of whether the people pulling the propaganda strings are benevolent or not, and which side of the "greatest good for the greatest number" line you stand. This is not always obvious at the time.
However, hats off to anyone who doesn't pay their license fee, because TV is utter shite.

What has the Beep got to do with a HPC? The Beep rocks and damn good value. Those who don't pay are freeriders, living off the backs of others!
The beeb was the only authoritative news source that questioned with any real vigour the war in Iraq. We don’t have much to be proud of in Britain, but the BBC is one organisation for which we can stand tall and be proud to be Bristish. Anyone who wants to see it replaced IMHO is a moron – you really want Rupert Murdoch to completely run the world. The BBC rocks, now stop free riding and pay up!
Nows where's this HPC?

please note that - as per my previous post - my disdain of the BBC has arisen only AFTER the dodgy dossier mess. I agree with you re their coverage of Blairs illegal war, but it was as a result of that independent view that their independence was effectively removed. By your own argument you shouldn't be paying your fee!

Pretended to question the war for the sake of form and appearing balanced (how else could they stop a riot?) but overwhelmingly decided in favour of invasion.

As with 'inflation is eating my savings' I don't pay because I don't watch because "TV is utter shite" (not necessarily because it is a propaganda tool of the establishment), and anyone who can't see that it is (mostly) shite is IMHO a moron.
There are alternatives like, er... thinking (and the net).
24. george monsoon said...
A lot of BBC broadcasts are available on the net. Does this mean that the powers that be, cannot fine you for viewing BBC material on the net?
25. rich said...
There's been talk of taxing internet connections, in whole or in part because of that question. I'm not sure what happened to that.
Personally when I can afford to stop sharing I'll have a TV for watching films (with no ariel) and skip the licence fee. I'll probably freeload a little by listening to the Today program, but that's perfectly legal.

Well when suposed BEEB Business reporters start asking Company Directors such questions as "Don't you think people may accuse you of just trying to make money" it's time to turn over.
PS. The BEEB in totally redundant now with the advent of YouTube and other emerging technologies.

Ref -What has the Beep got to do with a HPC?
Are you joking? Surely you can work out what influance the BBC has on such things by yourself?
Paul,
Not a 'commie' at all, but your reasoning is probably correct. Neo-Marxist or just plain 'anti-capitalist' probably. For example, I think Marx was wrong about communism, but right about Capitalism, and blaming Marx for the failures of 'Communism' is like blaming Jesus for the Spanish inquisition - The value of Marx should not be dismissed because of the historical missinterpretations and abuse of the term 'Marxist'. Nor does one have to reject Nationalism entirely to agree with Marx. Not quite sure what that makes me? Perhaps National- Socialist without the Imperialism, Racism and authoritarism?
Certainly well left of the current murder anyway!
