Inflation - No - Only 66% Pay Rise For MP's
Telegraph: MP's Want Pay Rise To £100K Per Annum
Our trusted MP's feel underpayed. As GP's earn £100K - they should too. Gordon wants us to have pay rises in line with CPI 2.4%, while his fellow MP's demand 66%?????
Inflation is at 5-9% (depending on your view) and we are told soon to drop. So why do our MP's need or deserve this? Yet another example of how one rule for us and one rule for Nu Labour & House of Commons.
Only posted out of sheer frustration !!! Perhaps this increase reflects the true cost of buying your second home in your local (or not) constituency.

This is absolutely disgusting and a sign that politicians really need to be knocked down a peg or two. Why in God's name do they think they are worth the money they are already paid, let alone deserve a 66% pay increase. They already have the longest summer holidays of any profession. I really wish there was a political reform party to vote for at the next election. To be honest, I would rather have a monarchy - at least the Royal family seem to have our best interests at heart and cost a darn site less - around 2% of the cost of parliament by my reckoning.

What a bizarre comparison.
Doctors save lives, whereas the New Labour death machine has been responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Pay rise?
I'd rather see them hanged.

So-called City fat-cats might well awarding themselves a cost-of living increase (average 18% I believe).
That probably reflects inflation as everyone seems strapped for cash, including MPs it would seem.
Perhaps in future pay-rises will trickle down the ranks, but those with the power are likely to look after themselves first and others when they can afford to.

Is that what is meant by a hung parliament? :-)
Hanging is too good for them. Bring back the rack.

Disgusting!!! As a nurse I've been told to expect no more than 1.5% next year which equates to around £6 a week (wow!...what will I do with it all). Now I'm no economist but surely even according to the government's own figures that's a pay cut. I know public sector workers are often slagged off on this blog but many of us are finding it a real struggle. It's the likes of MP's and other government fat cats that give the rest of us a bad name.

Not saying they dont deserve it or rather they didnt deserve more but 3 years ago GPs were paid 45K, guess who corrected that?

I have to ask, why the F*ck do GP's "deserve" £100,000K.

I am old enough to remember when MP pay was linked to the Civil Service Executive pay scale, and before any of you leap in and shout 'featherbedding' or 'overpaid', forget it! It was the basic 'Officer' rate. When in the early 70's major capping of Civil Service pay rate was introduced in recognition of what was seen as job security and good pension prospects, the MP's voted for linking to successively higher grades within the pay scales. Now that pay rates within the Civil Service compare dismally with comparative employment, the linking has been severed, our selfless political representatives see themselves as being worth an 'open market' sum, that sum being chosen by themselves. After all, what sort of market testing reveals the real value of a delusional camp follower who is eternally convinced that he/she is born to lead the herd?

I bet these tossers aren't included in the basket of goods. Come back Tories all is forgiven the economics of boom and bust all now make much more sence to me, periodically getting rid of the dead wood and all that. Much better and more predictable than the road these lot are leading us down!

My wife, who is a retired civil servant, tells me that prior to WW11 an Execuive Officer could afford to employ a servant.
The maximum pay for this grade is now in the region of £25/26k p.a. ( add a further £2k if working in London ).
iguana- I agree with your comments, and would also add that there are far too many MP's, and the expenses that they are allowed
to claim are vastly over generous, Viz: something in the region of £600 car mileage allowance for a return trip from Scotland to
Westminster, and really excellent heavily subsidised restaurant facilities; to give just two examples.

I think this is fantastic news. With a more attractive salary we might get politicians moving over from the private sector. Perhaps a competetive salary will end the era of the 'career politician'. More than a few politicians seem out of touch. They might seem cute and naive it it wasn't for the seriousness of the f%^^&* ups. What Britain needs is the best executive talent. We certainly do not want a bunch of people who look like frustrated, idealistic teachers making decisions that affect £billion worth of investment. Once the salary is set High. Then you might find that the job may attract a different personality type. Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this would be a refreshing and welcome not to mention necessary change. Rather than visualising a bunch of back-scratching ne'er do wells. Imagine instead a long row of pink slips...as the old eventually gets replaced with the new. We don't want people who are in politics to put shoes on all the poor little barefoot children. Wh then start yanking levers that bring even more trouble to the nation. We want discretion, experience, wisdom and responsibility. Attributes that seem to be lacking.

The best Irony of all is that you need no qualifications to be an MP just a bunch of twitts to elect you as one. The same applies to Ministers as well so it beggars belief that they want better salaries than Senior Civil Servants, Doctors and the top people in 'proper jobs' all with no qualifications and quite often no experience of actually working for a living. A good example of this is our Bullshitting PM and two Shags/Jags. Come to think of it does anyone know if Grabbing Gordon has ever had a proper job?

Well it's good to see I am not alone then!!!!!
And it is ironic that GP's get pay rise from 45K to 100K. Now MP's want pay rise from 60K to 100K. And they awarded the GP's the pay rise in the first place.
