"Mervyn King said that the combination of great difficulty in measuring numbers of migrants arriving into Britain and flawed 2001 census material was hampering the Bank’s ability to steer the economy. "

Dosen't exactly give you a great deal of confidence.

Bring in the ID card I say. I have nothing to hide.

Those that cannot prove why they are in the UK should then be thrown out.

The ID card is a rape of your freedom. I cannot believe a brit is saying bring it on. Having nothing to hide does not mean the government should know all. God I get so angry at some of the comments made on this site sometimes. If the ID card ever becomes necessary I will leave the country simple as that and I also have nothing to hide.

sirgoogle,

It would appear that many people in Guantanamo Bay have nothing to hide, but are held without trial. The record of human rights abuses in this country is escalating, and if you want to give your details and chance your hand, that's your problem. Personally I've got nothing to hide, which is exactly why they don't need to know my details. There is no way I'm carrying an ID card, and even less likely that I will be happy to pay the billions to run the idiotic scheme. Feel free to contribute yourself though.

Fully see your side too - it is not this Govt we may fear but perhaps one further down the line... perhaps a BNP govt God forbid (a distinct possibility the way the current main parties are going - I don't want to vote for any of them).

So what is a cost effective solution to coping with illegal workers?? Perhaps severe penalties for those who are caught employing them?? A spell for the employers in jail and a hefy fine and denial to trade for 3 years would probably do the trick methinks.

Or... beef up Customs and Excise and the Immigration service....

... Or indroduce financial rewards to the public for shopping the neighbours (that would be popular but probably too open to abuse).

Comments? Ideas ?

Anyone who employs illegal workers - or indeed anyone who does not go through the usual legal procedure for employment - even those that just avoid paying income tax - should be jailed. End of. Fair - across the board. Why bother doing anything else?

I agree that illegal employers should be punished severely. But I also think the government needs to continue to encourage the influx of skilled immigrants, and also the immigrants who will do the jobs that the chavs think are beneath them, into the country. If immigrants decided overnight they were going somewhere else the country would be left in a complete state and we would have to PAY them a lot of money/incentives to get back here as soon as possible. Be grateful for them. They are people like you and I who come from a less privilidged contry who are looking for a better life and are willing to work their asses off for it. I prefer them to our countries obese/able unemployed/neds/alcoholics any day of the week

If you really mean you're leaving when the ID card comes in, better get your cases in hand. Got me new passport this week for which they demanded third party documentation of every address I've had in five years, in anticipation of national ID cards tied to Interpol. It's already in law crumpets, put there by David Blunkett as his personal parting reminder that Gnu Labour doesn't give a care what you the public may think you want or will stand for.

Also had to produce photos for this new "biometric" document, [with eyes at a standardized level in practice for "iris" ID scan to come, for which they evidently ramping up]. The passport arrived with an ID microchip saying things about me that I can't read, and an ANTENNA, plus a brochure of warnings about keeping this piece of equipment at just the right temperature and storage conditions so that it doesn't self destruct or something. God knows what happens if you take this thing to the beach.

Let us know where you migrate to Nohpc. You could have a lot of company.
