How desperate is this?
ThisisLondon: Green parking charges to spark house price rise
Homes with off-street parking charges could increase in value
New 'Chelsea Tractor' parking charges will drive up the price of homes with a garage by up to 20 per cent, it has been claimed. The need for off-street parking to escape punishing charges could add as much as £80,000 to the asking price of a £400,000 family home in the south of England.

So parking outside your home is going to cost £80k over say 20 years, that's £4000/year! My car cost £800, I will get 5 years out of it, that's £160/year. Oh how the other have live.

Some people probably believe it. I'm sure a garage already adds value to a home but I doubt it will suddenly add another 80 thousand. However in the richest areas where money is no object you never know. I am very pleased to see chelsea tractor charges. These cars are unecessary and cause extra pollution.

Alternatively...
Homes without off-street parking charges could decrease in value. New 'Chelsea Tractor' parking charges will drive down the price of homes without a garage by up to 20 per cent, I claim...
Blah, blah, blah.

These cars are nescessry because the people bought them. We are not yet a communist wasteland thanks very much.

Funny, whenever I hear the word "infidel", all I can picture is Bernard Breslaw (RIP) blacked up as a Muslim tribal leader in "Carry on up the Khyber".
Hehe.

I suggest we gather up all the unnecessary cars that have been sold and require the car agencies to buy them back. That may put a few people out of work, including car salesmen, auto manufacturers, repair stations, the petrol companies, the DVLA, parking garages/attendants and car parks, traffic wardens [yeaaaaaah!], a good bit of the tourist industry, Tarmac, the Chunnel, Speed Ferries, and those who build and maintain the road systems, to name but a few -- HEY I'm game if they are.

Anyone who thinks these gas guzzling, "merchant banker" status symbol vehicles are necessary is in a very very very small minority.
I say tax the HELL out of anyone using a 4x4 for normal road use.
If it stays offroad for most of the year then obviously thats fine, being used for the reason it was designed.
comments welcome.

George - I do hope you're right about the minority thing.
Personally I think 4 by 4 drivers are selfish and arrogant, and if they think they have the right to get from A to B whilst polluting twice as much as a normal person, then they should be kicked unconscious. Although I'll settle for taxing the hell out of their stupid vehicles.
Boarder - "These cars are nescessry because the people bought them" is hardly a valid argument, and I seriously do hope you are in teh minority on this one.

A silly moo near me has a V10 Touareg to take little Millie to school (1.5 miles away) and back every day. I'm all in favour of a free market but this is plain stupidity and the school-run vehicle one-upmanship is frankly pathetic!
Ok, if you can't be arsed to walk to school then how about a Polo or something. A 3 tonne, 500bhp monster truck is hardly appropriate...

Absolutely agreed. It is very pathetic. My boss drives a 4by4 and was defending it on the grounds that it was a status symbol. He looked shell-shocked when I pointed out to him that most non 4 by 4 drivers see it as a status symbol too - a symbol that that defines the drivers status as somewhere between a naive but dangerous polluter and a selfish and arragont tosser.
If you get hit by one of these monster trucks, you are something like 3 times as likely to die. Given that knowledge 4by4 drivers should be treated like drunks. It's dangerous to other road users to go out driving drunk, or too fast, or in a monster truck. It should be automatic manslaughter charges.

Well I think we've done this one on 4X4 vehicles before, those who live in the City in a bedsit but like to give the impression of their "other home" being something in the country that requires a winch to bring in the groceries. On the pollution angle, it's all about as intelligent as Tele screens the size of a bed sheet and people who need sixty suits in the closet, an Imelda Marcos wardrobe of shoes, handmade signature golf clubs, a riding lawn mower for six square metres of grass, and custom furnishing in the baby's bedroom. Face it, it's all abnormal behavior, we don't need any of these things and why the hell do we want them so desperately? It is the source of all this debt as well and people being forced to keep jobs they hate while joined for life at the hip to maniacal bosses who need a lobotomy. We can blame most of our misery and mistreatment of others on the same acquisitive and status seeking instincts that have caused the so-called property "boom."
