Perversely, this will please the government. Ever-faithful media pundits have been touting this for so long that even the general public now expect it, which means that the government – sorry, the BoE MPC - can raise rates with less political risk. It is reminiscent of 5000 laid off at Rover, but don't worry the workforce were expecting it!

Harold, thats an interesting observation, and probably correct.
I must admit, I am becoming increasingly untrusting of any government behaviour and instinctively look for the ulteriour motive behind any government exercise.
This may be because I am now of an age where comfortable outweighs style - when shopping for clothes, or maybe I am coming to my senses at last...!
