Worrying estate of affairs as credit crunch takes toll on country piles.. Looks like the top end of the Scottish market isn't as insulated from the global economy as they'd like us to believe.

I particularly liked this part:

Morrington House, by Dumfries, is a beautifully restored country house.

The ground floor boasts a drawing room, morning room, dining room, library, sunroom, conservatory, kitchen, laundry and stores.

Upstairs, there are seven bedrooms.

"We had it at offers over £950,000 or £975,000 but now it's dropped down to £890,000," said Mr Macnab.

"It's the classic scenario – our client had two good offers both well over £1 million last year and he turned them both down because he thought we were in a rising market. Then the market turned against us so we recommended that he reduces his price to get the sale through."

Love hearing aboutgreedy people getting it up the shitter, and they don't come much better than that.

But what about the wave of cash-rich foreign buyers that the Scotsman was promising us back in December 2007? I distinctly remember them mentioning a wave of cash-rich foreign buyers who would snap up prime country estates and genteel mansions all over Scotland to add to their prestige property portfolios... what is the world coming to when you can't even get Russian billionaires to buy up your country's finest heritage? mad.gif

It's a bit like Deal Or No Deal. I watched that a couple of times and then had to stop because I felt really guilty about the enjoyment I was taking in watching people shafting themselves by being too greedy. Remember that the guy in the Scotsman story still hasn't sold, so he may end up getting much less than the offers he rejected last year.

Meanwhile, a Nationwide survey has shown the number of people who believe now is a good time to buy a house is at its highest for a year because of the credit crunch.

Of 1,000 people asked, 18 per cent thought it was an opportune time, the highest level since July 2007.

A spokesman for the building society said: "Consumers may start thinking it is a good time to get a discount in the buyers' market and expectations about house-price growth improved very slightly from May."

Where was this survey carried out, the mental hospital? This surely can´t be true as people simply cannot be so stupid ...
