Following the overthrow of the heavily vested US ally Pervez Musharraf the US moves on various locations on the Pakistani border with Afganistan to quell heavy resistance from training camps opposed to the US, with a crumbling political system, the Pakistani Military assume command and begin their own campaign to repel the Americans, also bolstering troops on the Border with India, after a series of mishaps with Indian soldiers a small nuclear device is detonated by 'terrorists' in New Delhi, India immediately moves to overrun Pakistan, but the US public are told the weapon originated in Iran and Israel with US assistance seizes the moment to attempt to destroy the Iranian political political system.
Hilary Clinton is elected US president.
At this moment China steps in fearing a nuclear conflict on its borders, while Syria is pulled into an affray with Turkey over tensions in Northern Iraq, under the guise of attempting to restore peace the UN orders increased peacekeeping forces to assist the US in its efforts to quell resistance, at this moment large explosions ring out in Japan, North Korea and China, the fog of war descends on every player, all trust between parties is lost, Oil tops $300 a barrel with Russia withholding supplies and Iran preventing any shipment out of the Gulf.
With rationing imposed in the UK and beyond each begins to look after its own, The UK first grants permission for the write off of debt to join the military, after this doesn't work a new Conscription law is passed as the rest of the world begins to fight for control of land a resources.

At least I was wrong about Hilary Clinton
The Ayatollah Bugheri
...but possibly right about the Pakistan/Afghanistan border being a flashpoint. Someone from a right-wing US think tank was interviewed on The World Tonight yesterday evening argued that the British operation in Afghanistan would be largely futile while Bin Liner's mob were able to scoot over the border and out of their reach. He concluded with words to the effect of 'Sooner or later we're going to have to go in there after them, with or without the Pakistani government's blessing'. If Bush decided to do that and bomb Iran during his final months in office, that would certainly be going out with a bang...
