If like some on here you STR'd in London in 2004, you'll be looking for a 40% fall to break even.

exactly right...the SE is not far behind either. I've raised that point before and remember one answer about renting being cheaper and using the amount saved to build up savings...i'd rather have a house and have paid more off the mortgage.
