Are you going to share your reasons as to why you believe these stocks are due for a downturn? I can think of individual shares in all these sectors that I wouldn't mind in my portfolio. I would happily hold TSCO, BAT, NG., VEG, and GSK.

Sorry I meant stocks to hold for a slowdown / recession.

Apologies. I misunderstood your (somewhat ambiguous) thread title. Yes, I agree!

Low borrowings, or in the case of nearly a fifth of the FTSE 100 net cash, makes companies vulnerable to takeover. It provides private equity bidders with the opportunity to load an acquisition with debt and so magnify returns on reduced shareholders funds.

I'm not too sure about these valuations' on the property portfolios' for supermarkets, and pubs. Sainsbury's recently re-valued it's portfolio. I suppose it's more of a problem if they sell and leaseback a lot of their property and we hit a recession and possible deflation.

Would leases be at say 25yrs at a high rent ?

Thats my feeling. I hold Aspen Insurance Holdings AHL (AMEX). PE 6.14. The share price was hit by hurricane Katrina, and has not recovered, although the earnings were only hit in one quarter of 2005.
