I'm interested in buying gold or gold stocks at the moment.

I am a newbie with respect to investments so I would like some advice on how to go about buying gold. how and where do you buy it? where can you keep it?

cheers

Hi DoctorJ,

Do a search as there are loads of threads giving advice. I started one of them asking a similar question.

Or, if you're the cynical type;

Krugerrands with cash

where can I buy krugerrands from?

Also, I listened to a recent peter schiff radio broadcast and he said that his gold stocks or gold mining stocks are doing well. does anyone own any of these stocks and have any tips?

You can buy 1oz Krugerrands online through goldline.co.uk (don't even have to talk to anybody) - just print off the invoice and send them a cheque through the post within 48 hours

Gold mining stocks have 'leverage' ie gold rises 1% and the stock rise 3% - but you have to knowledgable about WHICH mining stocks to go for - it's volitile

IIRC DrBubb is probably the best person to ask about gold mining stocks...

You might want to look at ETF's, depending on your motives, timescales and level of paranoia. If you just want to have a punt on the gold price and aren't worried about insuring yourself against a global meltdown of financial systems and currencies, and also not bothered about anonimity, then ETF's are a convenient way to do so. They are bought/sold like any other share and don't have the hassles of buying physical gold and keeping it under the mattress. Two main ones are Streettracks Gold, traded on the NYSE, and Lyxor traded on the LSE.

However, be aware that some consider them risky in the event of a global meltdown.

Another way if you're more sophistcated and understand the markets is via rolling futues contracts. These also avoid CGT. But I guess if you know about them you wouldn't be posting on here!
