Agree with you in sorts Malco, though it's arguable that motorists are indeed targeted as pedestrian killers nowadays.
The only study I've seen (by the Transport Research Lab a few years ago, who do a lot of research for the government) showed that in about 80% of cases where pedestrians were killed by cars the pedestrian was at fault, and in about half the cases the pedestrian was drunk.
Of course when I was a kid we were bombarded with propaganda pointing out that roads were for cars and other vehicles, and not playgrounds... and we even had Darth Vader showing us the correct way to cross the road without getting killed. It's only in recent years that kids have been _encouraged_ to think that roads are places to play, and it's therefore no surprise that they get squashed on a regular basis as they 'exert their right' to the road.
Back on topic, I agree: I'd love to see an end to gold mining, as my gold would be substantially more valuable
