Muttley, if that were the national press you were quoting and SkyTV was full of endless repeats about goldbuying you would be totally right. As it is, you are totally right within the population of goldbugs.

This is like a bubble in minature (which is why it could well retrench pretty massively), but also it might spread to a larger pyramid base of investors and keep going up. I say 'pyramid' because under loose fiat money, we will endlessly have bubbles, and this could be the next one. But that is not my interest, as I don't want to convert my gold back to paper money. (Realistically though, at outlandish highs, I would swap some for a house and a few other odds and ends.)

I've always thought gold could go down at least 30% during a deflationary depression (and that was from a lot lower base than we are now), as well as seeing enormous (nominal only) upside during an inflation or hyperinflation.

What makes me hold gold is that I believe that fiat currency will collapse and the gold standard will return. This makes gold of great real future value, and makes me a tiny minority of economic/political opinion - a fruitcake, so to speak. smile.gif I also still think gold is historically cheap compared to the DOW and especially compared to houses (but it might stay that way).

I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy anything more than a throwaway amount of gold unless they join me in my strange beliefs, and work it all out for themselves.

Start by reading Conquer the Crash (Amazon link) by Robert Prechter. Even an arch-bear like him doesn't believe fiat will collapse for sure and recommends mainly cash in a safe currency and a super-strong bank, and only a touch of gold for safe keeping. (I think he's wrong, but that's a different story.)

So I've given in. I now own a couple of gold stocks....
