Hi

I've got a whopping 2oz of gold which are sitting inside a cardboard whiskey bottle tube, which isn't the safest of places to keep them! Before I buy any more coins, I'd like to buy a safe, which I'd also find useful to keep important documents etc in.

Anyone know anything about them? I'd probably put it under the stairs and hopefully screw it into the wall and/or floor. I'd be looking to spend £200-£300.

Ta,

Have a look at these from Screwfix.

Are you sure a safe is such a good idea? At the moment very few people keep gold bullion, except maybe really wealthy people. As I see it the principal safety feature is simply in the stuff being unsuspected. I don't know what your circumstances are but unless you live in a very big house I would have thought a safe would excite intense curiosity in any burglar. Why not just leave the coins where they are? Or secrete them in the workshop amongst some scrap pipes, or amongst bits and pieces in the garage? Or you could make cut-outs in a dictionary, or hide them in a little space under the linoleum. It's just that if you get broken into while you're away on holiday they'll have time to deal with the safe. They probably won't rake everywhere looking for gold coins unless they know they are there.

I'd avoid having the coins delivered to your home address. I just don't know whether the people who deliver special delivery can be absolutely trusted. I get mine delivered at my work address and tell people they're legal documents or ornaments or whatever. Nobody is going to suspect you of buying gold coins, not at the moment. I doubt 1 in 1,000 people are even thinking about buying bullion at the moment. Look at how little interest there is in gold threads on this forum.

Alternatively a safe deposit box in a bank is maybe the best idea, but I don't know how much they cost. As the gold rush takes off there will be a sharp rise in burglaries, for sure, and then security will become more of an issue.

I would think that a floorboard safe would be most inconspicuous especially underneath a carpet or even in the loft. After all burglars are very unlikely to be pulling up carpets or even going into a loft. All IMHO of course smile.gif

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

I did consider that a safe may attract attention, but I would have thought the opportune thief would be in and out of your house in minutes. The floor safe sounds like a good option though - I think I'll explore this avenue.

I've been buying the few coins I have from a coin/medal dealer in Newcastle(this has given me an idea for another thread!), so I don't have any worries with people knowing I have gold in my house. If I start buying from Baird & Co, I'll probably do like you say Malco.

Regards,

Bury them in the garden?

Buy a small second-hand safe (size of small TV). Put it in your bedroom closet.

Don't put anything of any great value in it. Stash the gold inside a hollow space somewhere in your house--say inside a wall, in a false bottom of something.

The safe is a decoy. ph34r.gif

Will chocolate gold coins go up in value in a recession/depression?

If so, I'd better buy my christmas stocking supplies ASAP.

Secretion is always the best defence - the only way i got my watch out when I was captured by North Vietnamese Army fighting in VIETNAM!

Ive been staring at this kilo of gold for the last hour wondering how much lube it will take??

quick question as i looked for safes too as i was interested.

Most safes are rated against cash storage but then given a higher value for jewllery storage.

For example a safe may be rated at 1k cash and 5k jewellery.

So what does precious metals come under??Cash or jewellery. It can be both depending, cant it?

A good old floor safe under the stairs sunk in concrete. Do it yourself, cost around £200. Problem is you can`t take it with you unless you have a kango. smile.gif
Fitted around 50 using this method when in business.
