Markets fluctuate.
Once it hits 8200 i'll know it hasn't hit the top
If it hits 7400 I'll know it has.
I was noting the fact that the head long dsh upwards seemed to have slowed and had perhaps plateaued.

jonpo, do you have any feeling about the length and/or depth of any coming correction ? Do you think we are looking at a smallish temporary correction, or a full-blown bear market ? I don't mean a concrete prediction, I just wondered if you have a general idea.
There seems to be a lot of feeling that shares are going down this spring/summer, but not much indication of by how much or for how long. Bernanke's speech and the 11-0 vote won't have helped sentiment either, I guess. To me, shares don't look cheap or over-valued (except the 250

), unless of course earnings are about to take a dive.

My feeling is that the decline in the 250 when it does happen (which may or may not be this year). will be long and secular (multi year). 250 is a more representative index of the UK and as such will be hit much worse than the FTSE100 by a serious slowdown. where we have had the longest period of uninterupted post war growth, read an equivalent bust period. as you say though valuations are not streched currently but 05 was probably the peak in the business cycle globaly. that means profits and margins will adjust downwards from here in some cases this is priced in but others it is not. the question is how much down will profits go ? im in the deflation bear camp so I think it will be very nasty for anglophone economies. but there remains the outside chance of one last ditch reflation before Kwinter comes in to stay.
either way I am mostly exposed to East asian equities. as they look set to be good performers in a multitude of growth/inflation/deflation scenarios

I'm not too sure but its been going on for years. Several years back the FTSE100 and FTSE250 were about equal. I think in the last 3 years the FTSE250 has gone up about 150% and the FTSE100 only about 60%. Its amazing that the FTSE250 has shown no signs of flagging.

Well its up more than 4% today.

Crazy that a record drop is followed the next day by a record rise.
I guess it is more volatile than the FTSE100 - it decreases more than the FTSE100 on a bear market and increases more than the FTSE100 on a bull market.

Midcap outperformance has been checked since May's peaks. Smallcaps and AIM similar story.
What does this tell us? The market's appetite for growth/risk shares has waned. Similar story in the US where Nasdaq has underperformed since January. This is not conducive to a rising stock market if investors are afraid of speculative ventures.

The way I see it is that the FTSE100 is unrepresentative of the market as it is overweight in 3 or 4 sectors. The FTSE250 still contains big companies but a more diverse range of sectors. I am not involved in small caps. Anyway i have now split my portfolio half FTSE100 and half FTSE250.

I think this analysis is now out the window. The Nasdaq had an excelent August, up 5%.
The FTSE250 is picking up steam and generally rising more each day than the FTSE100, now at 9,715.70 .
