Help
I won't bother posting my problem(s) in case its a waste of time, but I have absolutely no knowledge of it at all (other than googling, and I've been doing that all day to no avail!), and have what seems an unfixable problem with enterprise manager..
So can anyone help?

its not an error as such...
Using Windows 2003 server and oracle 10g(!)
OEM was accessed through web browser using http://localhost:5500/em..but this stopped working after 5 mins..'Internet explorer was unable to display the web page'...only way to get it working again was to stop and restart the service in window services...then 5 mins later would go down again
Looking at log files it seems to say that access is denied to something or other...not at work at the mo so can't access log files, but was someting along the lines of 'OEM started with a PID of 1234, then 30 seconds later 'unable to find PID 1234, forcing exit of OEM'
After most of the day googling it seemed the solution was to reconfigure the OEM by doing something like
emca -deconfig dbcontrol db -repos drop
emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create
(it asks me for various passwords and the listener port??)
but thats made matters worse! it throws up an error about the listener, and now the service won't start at all (it doesn't even exist in the services so I can't restart it from there!
database still up and running and working fine, but no OEM
It would help if I had a clue what I'm doing! I'm a complete beginner to oracle, today is the first time I've used anything other than OEM, but as we have no DBA or techinical support its up to me to fix it! way out of my depth!

If OEM is just browser based GUI then there could be a whole heap of simple reasons why it doesn't appear- presumably it is Java based, have you the right version of Java, has IE defaulted to some security mode, has the port changed, firewall etc?

You would be better advised posting on a specialist Oracle DBA forum
You will also need to provide more details from the log since the actual error message may merely be a symptom of something else that has gone wrong

BTW you do not mention how the problem started. Has OEM been recently installed or has it been working fine and just blown up today. If the latter and the configuration has not been changed then it suggests that either something outside of OEM is responsible or that you are suddenly blowing some resource limit (the fact that the system starts and then dies after 5 minutes suggests you may have a problem with the latter)..

I know I'm just clutching at straws really.. I don't have access to logs etc at the moment so was hoping someone might just say 'oh yeah thats simple just double click this icon and all will be fine!'

Sadly I am not an Oracle DBA (I have not touched it since the days of Oracle 7 and Forms3) but I have plenty of grey hairs from working on other databases from CA-IDMS, through DB2, to SQL Server.
My top tip is don't thrash about blindly and don't tinker with the OEM configuration until you have some idea what exactly is causing the issue
Bitter experience has taught me that no matter how much managers shout for quick fixes doing nothing is better than doing something stupid and making things worse.
Write down the problem (keep it simple) and then list possible causes (permissions and policies, ports, firewalls, listeners, browser settings,applets etc) and investigate them one by one.
Check ALL the available logs including both those generated by Oracle and Windows.

BTW does the machine in question have a fixed IP address or is DHCP enabled ? Is the loopback adaptor installed ?

I have bought a newish (5 years) house in November 2006. I talked the vendor down 30% off peak 2004 price am am paying less than the 2002 price. I feel prices will continue to drop down to the 2001 price but saving for 5 years hopefully means i wont be stung. I'm an Oracle DBA. This error is a common problem. We had it recently too. Can't remember what the fix was exactly though. I'm not at work for a couple of days but when I get back I'll check it out and post the fix.
