Instead we need a citizens id database. You set it up, then add children at birth if parents are UK citizens. Other than that, you only get added if you apply to come here legally, and then go through a process of naturalization.

All those entering the UK illegally, should be deported with no appeal. Use the id system to grant the right to come here, and update it at the port when someone arrives.

And if someone doesn't check out at a port before their right to remain is over, pick em up and deport them.

that's how it's going to have to be.

a lot of bleeding hearts from across the political spectrum live their lives in ivory towers and because immigration has no effect on their immediate lives,fail to see the divisions and problems it creates.

leicester has real problems in it's schooling system,coping with the amount of kids coming in with no english.it's a struggle for the NHS too as a lot of people arrive with healthcare problems.

Unless they marry a UK or EU citizen, just one. ILR under Long Residence rule allows those who arrived illegally and managed to avoid being caught for 14 years to apply for settlement. Those with criminal record are normally refused. Of course, there is always a magic spell called "Human Rights", but it will get much tougher as the legal aid will no longer be granted for immigration.

Keeping a low profile for 14 years is pretty tough as a single encounter with authorities may lead to a criminal record.

If, despite the "lost" paperwork, the details are found in the database, the next stage is to appeal to human rights and file for asylum.

If you have a citizens id database, you don't. Such a database will instantly recognise someone who shouldn't be in the UK. Sooner or later you will come into contact with it as an illegal if the state use it everywhere. As soon as you are caught, you can be sent home.

You barely need border guards at all.

We havent got enough centres to place illegals in as it is....they already come into contact with UKBA and often through raids on restuarants etc etc.....they are released virtually straight away, even if found to be illegal as there is nowhere to hold them...so what makes you think this would change without more massive public mony and taking on a whole new army of public sector workers..

You all missed the point. The article doesn't talk about the issue of immigration, it talks about the need for even more security theatre to protect us from them terrarists. There was no suggestion that the numbers of illegal immigrants was a problem, as that's non-PC, but instead, it said there was a need to encourage us to drop our shorts and bend over for a cavity search every time we want to visit Europe.

Yes, but what sort of crime is it? I can see why translation facilities would be strained, but the impression I get of Polish immigrant crime in general is domestic violence, neighbour disputes, unlicensed cars, and general petty/nuisance crime, but from my perspective the majority of Polish people don't seem more inclined to criminal acts than the rest of the populace, with Romani Gypsies by far more inclined to career criminality and unfairly barging in on Big Issue selling. And nasty psychos can come from anywhere and everywhere (that Newport ex-Army guy who raped and murdered that heavily pregnant girl).

A symptom of French authorities shunting its immigrants onto us is a minority of African immigrants speaking a French dialect.

Also Zanu Bob's anecdote about dubious immigrants doing vast amounts of very menial, rubbish work matches up with my perceptions - in a Bristol supermarket car park I saw South Asian looking guys doing manual car washing, when a Dominos Pizza place opened at Keynsham they had non-local people standing about with billboards, and a local curry house I walk/drive past on almost daily basis had been employing illegals.

This has had quite an interesting consequences in our area, namely, that the curry houses have now started employing young English teens to work the phones and be on the counter at the weekend because the recently-arrived cooks etc cannot speak English well enough to take orders correctly.

And to be honest, considering I live in an area where some rather testing things have happened recently vis a vis race and crime, I thought this was a rather smart move on the part of the curry kings.

They ask them their name and give em a wad of sterling and ask them not to run away into the country or they may be put in prison and will have to stay even longer until their case is heard, then they will let them out give em more money and a job( which they will keep for a fortnight until their benefit claim comes through) . Ah what a nice country we are.

it goes on...I thought increased immigration meant we'd all be richer?ok a bit of pressure on housing but all the socialists and big govt advocates assure us regularly that high levels of immigration make them rich.

And if the liberals get their way they will double that by granting anyone and everyone a amnesty, Not even thinking about the knock on effect it will have on youth unemployment the health service ,education,future pensions,just to name a few. We have really been stuffed by the last government and this one is just carrying on the same format.
