Slightly off topic. Excellent doc by Huddersfield poet and presenter Simon Armitage.

In a journey that takes him across Britain and to South Korea, poet and gadget lover Simon Armitage explores people's obsession with upgrading to the latest technological gadgetry.

South Korea looks to be a thoroughly depressing (and depressed) place.

A dystopian warning to those berating UK govt. for not upgrading them to 4G. :D

As if the bankers would stand for this

Europe’s biggest banks may need to hold core-capital reserves of as much as 17 percent under plans being weighed by European Union lawmakers.

http://www.businessw...by-eu-lawmakers

Democorruptcy
If you say "Democorruptcy" quickly, it sounds a bit like "Democracy". In a "Democracy" people vote for politicians who represent their interests. In the UK's "Democorruptcy" people can only vote for expense fiddling thieving MPs who are in the hip pocket of big business and the finance sector.

Governbankment
A "Governbankment" is a Government that has no line between itself and banks. It diverts public money (our taxes) to private companies (banks). George Osborne's Help to Buy Bail Banks, will see our taxes go to bankers to cover their losses on mortgages that default. The UK's Governbankment will even pay bankers "reasonable repossession fees" on Help to Bail Bank mortgages that default.

The Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS) is stealing from savers to make them pay for crimes by bankers. Via lower interest on savings, all the bank fines for PPI, LIBOR, interest rates swaps, etc. are being paid by savers so that bankers can keep pocketing bonuses.

"We need to make a really big change: from an economy built on debt to an economy built on savings" - David Camoron Jan 2009
"Printing money is the last resort of desperate governments when all other policies have failed" - George Osborne Jan 2009
- So what do Camoron & Osborne do? Print money and leave interest rates at 0.5% when inflation is over 5%

If it is asserted that civilization is a real advance in the condition of man -- and I think that it is, though only the wise improve their advantages -- it must be shown that it has produced better dwellings without making them more costly; and the cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run.

On banker pay, the document suggests that payment of at least 60 percent of a bonus award should be deferred for a minimum of three years. Also, regulators would be required to collect the names and job titles of bank employees paid more than 1 million euros a year. The EBA would publish a report on regulators’ findings.

Only a matter of time before ECB is forced into massive quantitative easing

if there is ever to be any way out of this mess for the eurozone as a whole, other than break-up, a German boom is just the ticket. If there is relatively high inflation in Germany, it reduces the size of the deflation needed in the periphery to return to competitiveness. For the good of the whole, it's right that the ECB should be inducing a boom in Germany.

Agree with the quote though. Not sure Merkin/Schauble will.

He assumes no monetisation.

Soros has a plan for a seignorage fund that effectively sets up a transfer union without breaching Lisbon 123 - he had a short article on it:

If you've never heard of Khan Academy this might be useful. This is the section on explaining various financial instruments. He is an excellent reference for many mathematical and statistical things.

12 Predictions by Pettis on China - excellent as usual (via Mish)

Regarding HAM's request for further thoughts on the Chinese politcal scene I have little to add past northshore and RK's excellent articles. Generally speaking I never read the comments on China articles as they are generally quickly infected by CCP trolls. The only other thing I have to add is given that the Chinese media is now claiming that Heyward was poisoned by cyanide following an affair with Bo's wife, I'd imagine that the only saving grace for the soon to be orphaned young Guagua will be not getting a bill for two bullets as the Chinese are moving to lethal injection.
