I have kept an eye on Stoke for some years and made various visits. On the surface it seems OK, not an impression i get when I visit for instance Nottingham or some other places. I appreciate its impoverished in places. What parts of Stoke on Trent are to be avoided due to crime and antisocial behavour ? Some cheap ex la semis in abbey hulton and Blurton area have caught my attention but I dont know what its like to live there, I dont mind Tunstall, and Hanley appeals due to its proximity to the town centre. Can't advice you personally, don't know Stoke, but recommend looking up back issues of the local paper online to see reports and stories on crime and anti-social behaviour to see where it's at. Maybe go into a local barbers for a haircut and a chat too, they'll probably know the low down. Also if you fancy the look of some place take a drive round in the evenings and on weekends to see if you get a lot of youths hanging about looking for trouble. The state of the neighbours gardens, hedge rows and the amount of litter and graffiti in the area are good indicators too. Look closely, I made the mistake of moving somewhere once that was rough as, but when I looked at it my road looked spotless, brand new LA houses and a newly resurfaced road. Didn't look like that 3 years later, that's for sure, had my gas meter box vandalised on the day I moved in and when I rented it out to tenants they had their car vandalised outside their front door by a drunken gang of 40 youths. Be careful out there. Mind you, I sold at the peak for a handsome profit that I ploughed into gold and now couldn't be happier. The gang that vandalised my tenant's car, forcing me to agree to let them move out early without penalty on their request (as it wasn't safe - no sh1t!) really sorted things out for me, cheers guys. Newcastle-under-Lyme and Trent Vale are good locations. Both near the M6 and good for the railway station if you commute to Manchester or Birmingham. Only 1 hour 20 minutes from London. Can buy a good 2/3 bedroom property with garden for less than 80K. I recently bought an ex -council house for 75k in Trent Vale. Has three bedrooms and space to expand. I haven't checked out this forum for a while, but I guess you might still be monitoring replies occasionally. I think you've got a good idea moving to Stoke. I moved there from London in 97 and stayed until 06. Stoke gets a bad press, but it actually has a lot going for it. It is surrounded by some really lovely countryside, and is small enough to make the countryside accessible whichever part you are living in. People are friendlier than in London (the BNP supporters excepted), and it is not just property prices that are cheaper; the cost of living is significantly lower all round. There are downsides too. There is a neanderthal element, which resulted in several BNP councillors for a while. A good way of working out the areas to avoid would be to look at where the BNP vote is concentrated. Shopping facilities are poor, but Birmingham and Manchester are not that far away. If you are into eating out, then you might be disappointed by the standard of local restaurants. The centre of Hanley has a reputation for rowdy nightclubs (but then you might like rowdy nightclubs). The biggest problem is lack of employment, which forced us to move away after my husband was made redundant. For property, it is worth looking outside Stoke at Newcastle under Lyme, and the surrounding rural villages in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Prices are not much higher than Stoke itself, but accessibility to the M6 puts prices up a lot -- if you don't need the M6, avoid properties close to it.
