'Britain's shambolic Border Agency has routinely dropped or downgraded major immigration controls for the past five years without ministerial approval, a devastating report revealed last night.

It found up to half a million Eurostar passengers arriving from French tourist resorts, including Disneyland Paris, were waved into Britain without facing any anti-terror checks.

The European nationals were not examined against the Home Office’s so-called Warnings Index, which contains details of terrorists and dangerous criminals who must be refused entry to keep the public safe.

The report, which was ordered after last year’s revelations that senior civil servants were abandoning passport checks, provoked fury, with MPs criticising Britain’s ‘Mickey Mouse’ immigration controls. Yesterday’s report also revealed how:

Staff at Heathrow Airport allowed foreign students into Britain last year – even if they did not have a valid visa;

Officials abandoned reading expensive biometric chips in passports nearly 15,000 times at ten ports between January and June last year;

Anti-terror checks were abandoned more than 350 times over the two years, mostly at ports in France, because long traffic jams were a ‘health and safety’ problem;

Such is the poor record-keeping at the agency, that the true implications of the border breaches may never be known;

On a number of occasions, including the Eurostar loophole, UKBA staff acted entirely without ministerial approval.

The report, by John Vine, chief inspector of the UK Border Agency, was commissioned last year following the so-called ‘Brodiegate’ scandal.'

it goes on...I thought increased immigration meant we'd all be richer?ok a bit of pressure on housing but all the socialists and big govt advocates assure us regularly that high levels of immigration make them rich.

And if the liberals get their way they will double that by granting anyone and everyone a amnesty, Not even thinking about the knock on effect it will have on youth unemployment the health service ,education,future pensions,just to name a few. We have really been stuffed by the last government and this one is just carrying on the same format.

We havent got enough centres to place illegals in as it is....they already come into contact with UKBA and often through raids on restuarants etc etc.....they are released virtually straight away, even if found to be illegal as there is nowhere to hold them...so what makes you think this would change without more massive public mony and taking on a whole new army of public sector workers..

I sort of agree. The problem is massive. If you are going to sort this out, first of all you need the id database to help you recognise those who are here illegally and those who are not.

And for those that are here illegally, you need to send them home again on an almost industrial scale. Spending on this would be massive to begin with.

Once it becomes clear that if you come to the UK illegally, you will be sent home, no human rights or anything like that, then people will stop coming here illegally, and the cost of repatriation will fall as a result. You cant avoid that big spend though if you wish to resolve the problem.

Um, how would the international community, let alone neighbouring countries such as France, Belgium, and Holland, react to the UK state forcibly rounding up hundreds of thousands/possibly millions of people and then attempting to take them back mainland Europe?! <_<

The vast majority of terror attacks carried out by non-British citizens have come from the Irish Republic and they have never faced a passport controls or 'anti-terror' checks but we have somehow managed.

We would do better to concentrate on non-EU borders and join Schengen. The UK Border Agency does make checks in Paris and Brussels and are making nothing but a nuiscance of themselves. Travel around the EU should be no different to travalling to Glasgow or Cardiff.

Not well. The trouble is you either do it, or you abandon all border controls as there is no point. The current situation is the worst of all worlds.

I dont think anyone can complain if we deport illegal immigrants. It might not be liked, but we have a right to defend our borders.
