marlint
Thinking about moving somewhere in the Vale of Glamorgan from current base in Cardiff (either to buy or rent) Does anyone have views on villages to look at/avoid? Priorities are: 1.) Should have a pub 2.) Preferable an active community (often goes hand in hand with 1.) 3.) Not too snooty (i.e. no Cowbridge) 4.) Preferably quite small Much appreciated... It is worth you spending a couple of hours reading back through the threads here in the Wales sub-forum as there are plenty of comments and info on the Vale. IMPO lots of the places are over-priced and/or so far stuck up their own backside. Many seem to suffer from being iced in in winter or being flooded. Stuff like mains drainage, mains power, gas, and broadband are also problems in many. Llanwit Major seems about the best of the bunch IMPO but I haven't really given it much though. Others on here will be more knowledgeable about the area than me.
niceathome
Barry has plenty of pubs.
Battenberg
Personally, I wouldn't want to go to Barry but it is probably the liveliest followed by Llantwit. I like Llantwit and we did look at a few houses out there as you get more for your money but I don't like getting to it and the travelling to school, work etc wouldn't have worked for us. It does have plenty to offer though with the shops, beaches and a mix of housing. If my kids weren't settled at school I'd have shifted sideways to Dinas up by St Andrews Major somewhere. A friend of mine moved from Dinas to Rhoose and has a cracking social life there too. I would say most villages in the Vale are fairly small and quiet and it's a bit of an aquired taste. Personally I love it, and I can play it as snooty as the best of 'em. We're completing on a house between Cowbridge and Bridgend the end of Jan. TMT, I like your comment re the broadband, so true. We're moving away from a crappy 2mb to BT Infinity at 56 mb. My eldest can't wait. Edited January 8, 2013 by Battenburg

Friends of used to live there but moved away claiming that it had become too rowdy, but it seemed a lovely place to me.

Tankus
I moved to Rhoose last year.... Settled in quite nicely....the coast is deserted and ace for walks. The commute to cardiff can be a bit of a mission though at peak..... Llantwit doubly so.... Dinas and Sully,(mega Sunday car boot sales in the summer) would be a good choice.... Barry is not all bad..(avoid Gibbs town)... Quite like the Knap and around the ex butlins concentration camp on the Island ....There's a new link road going in towards morrisons ......plenty of rentals on the market...... Might want to try that out before a commit I do love llantwit though.....I often shop there rather than Barry which is nearer I've been cut off once so far because of flooding, but it was for less than 12 hours....Snow is going to be interesting.... Methinks Big transit investment coming to Cardiff and the valleys which is going to extend into the vale. http://mgbarryconsulting.com/south-wales-metro.htm Can only be good
Niall of the Nine Hostages
If your budget will stretch to it Sully I don't understand why Sully has such a local cachet. There is nothing wrong with it and I've never heard of any trouble there, but its more of a bit of ribbon development alongside a rocky bit of coast, than a village. Dinas looks more like an actual village with three pubs in the centre.

That strip of grey, dirty looking Bristol Channel... a bit like Mumbles... close your eyes and imagine you are living in the Bahamas! That strip of grey, dirty looking Bristol Channel... a bit like Mumbles... close your eyes and imagine you are living in the Bahamas! Ha! Yeah, although I think Mumbles has more to be said for it with more pubs, even clubs, and a pier, all set on a hill with a couple of decent beaches just behind. I suppose many people from Cardiff spend a summers afternoon getting inebriated in the garden of the Captain's Wife and think of Sully as the local riviera. Niall of the Nine Hostages
I quite like the captains wife Well, if you haven't been there recently (and who could blame you with this weather) next time you go, when the weather is good enough to sit outside that is, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see that someone has used a JCB to clear the mass of concrete rubble from the beach. Hopefully they will finish the job rather than leave it in a great big pile. I've always thought that it was an bit of an oddity, that a place that is such a magnet in the summer and all looks nice and twee, nice and twee that is until you look over the wall and see the rat infested nuked remains of what I guess were WWII bunkers and pill boxes. And yet nobody could be bothered to clear that mess up that has been lying there since...WWII? Underneath that mess, it is now emerging that there is something like a beach. Which, when and if they finish, you might be able to sit on in the summer, with your pint from the Captains Wife.

Previous owners were trying to nick some of the beach IIRC build it up and concrete over it but i think they failed to inform the council and that was it hence the state of the beach
