  1. Yeah, I have zero chance of being productive when my 4-year old is home and I wouldn't try and pretend otherwise. I started a new fully remote role in October, and have never been to the office. Had a very detailed onboarding process, get plenty of time to focus, and I'm collaborating with people in the US, Ireland, Serbia, Turkey, and India. The pay is probably comparatively not great but I get to have a nice lifestyle in the Aegean, which is a reasonable compromise.
  2. Yeah, my son is 4 years old and bilingual English/Turkish (we live in Turkey). We mostly speak English at home but kindergarten is a fully Turkish environment for him and some of his teachers didn't even realise that he speaks another language - he's just a regular chatty kid for them.
  3. Nah, life is good. Moved from Istanbul to the Aegean, which has been a great change of lifestyle, and got a new fully remote job. Turkish economy is pretty shit but we are not paying rent so are better off than many.
  4. We just moved to the Aegean coast from Istanbul because we can both work from home and there is no need for us to put up with the drawbacks of the big city. My wife is the primary earner and her employers were more than happy for her to go fully remote - she's a lead designer at her company so reasonably senior and they have found over the last few years that fluent English speakers are difficult to hire in-country, so they clearly just want to keep her on board. I'm currently interviewing for a position that was ostensibly onsite but turned out to be remote for the right CV.
  5. I think it makes more sense for BOMAD to help out now in the current environment. A few years ago mortgages were cheap so there was less incentive for parents to utilise their cash other than for the deposit. Now, parents that have cash are getting poor returns in their savings account compared to what the offspring is having to fork out for a mortgage or for rent.
  6. 3.2% isn't great but rents broadly speaking increase in line with inflation so if you are cash rich and in it for the long-term, that starts to make more sense as an index-linked return.
  7. I live in Bodrum on the Aegean coast. There is an area here that caters to British tourists that's pretty downmarket, but other than that it's pretty nice.
  8. Not really, the local operators aren't stupid and they rapidly adjust their prices in the tourist areas so that they stay the same in dollars/euros.
  9. Own a small flat in the UK that I bought back in 2010 (now 20% LTV). Have been renting in Istanbul since I emigrated but we will shortly move down to the coast where we can work from home and not pay rent in my in-laws' holiday home.
  10. The rental market seems nuts in Edinburgh. I have a flat in the city centre so I keep an eye on the market, and 2 bed flats appear to have gone up by 20% in the last year. There's nothing available for less than £1200/month.
  11. It does have great potential, but it's not just the economics. Arguably the economics is the result of another issue, which is too much clientelism. The central bank is full of yes men, and generally to get ahead in business you need to be on good terms with the party in government. It's a shame, the country is full of engineers and quite astute businesspeople but they operate in a very tilted environment.
  12. Yeah, we are moving away from Istanbul this month because of the earthquake risk. When that major earthquake happens, it will be brutal. Fifteen million people and some neighbourhoods are exceptionally high density with poor building quality.
  13. That might be true for him and Apple but in many organisations and roles there is little requirement for creativity or ideas generation. There are processes to follow, targets to be met, projects to be completed, services to be provided.
  14. There will still be farmers, gamekeepers etc who will know what you are up to.
  15. They don't need a drone or officers, you'll have neighbours and sooner or later someone will grass you up, especially if you fall out with them.
