billybong
Likely every current offer is just an attempt to get the referendum cancelled. A variation of the jam tomorrow ploy - also a speciality in the UK. Once cancelled then it's back to hard ball. From Mr Mason in RK's youtube link it sounds like they're offering to shuffle the debt from one creditor to another - so they can pretend that they're still negotiating and making "generous" offers with no need for the referendum and it's the Greeks being intransigent. I've said it before, the Greek people will decide what happens. If they dont get their way there will be BIG trouble. The Greek MPs have done THE right thing....let the people decide. It's about time all democracy's worked like this
billybong
In the bbc's "2 year bailout programme" link above they're now talking about the possibility of a mafia takeover so the well trodden propaganda pattern recently observed in the Scottish referendum seems to be starting to emerge now. interestrateripoff
Greeks table offer of new two-year bail-out deal to creditors but promise to default on the IMF tonightSo an IMF default? Is that considered a real default or just a pretend one?
thehowler
Why are they asking for a new bailout, hours away from the collapse of the second? Because they know the referendum wheeze is a dead duck and at midnight they're insolvent and the ECB might be forced to kill their banks before the weekend. Technocrat govt by next week, quick new deal and maybe even some debt reduction.
thehowler
Merkel has just torpedoed the BS third bailout wheeze - won't consider it until after the ref. So the brilliant, tactical move that was the ref has turned out to be a noose for T and V. All Merkel has to do is sit back and watch them lose it - and then let them resign. She can then negotiate with the rescue govt and even offer them some debt reduction, merciful and winning. Still a chance the Greek demos will be brave enough to resist but the odds don't look good. TheCountOfNowhere
Merkel said Nein. She wants first the referendum to get rid of T & V for good. I think the greek chaps knew that would be the answer. Sometimes you have to ask the question so it doesnt come back to bite you. These fellows know what they are doing. They might well get their deal but even if they dont they get their country, It's WIN-WIN for these men. Sometimes it's better to have principals and stand proud, these men are showing this. They make the slimey devious 2nd hand car salesmen types we have in parliament look like spoilt children.
