Realistbear
It is apparently not contained. Radio talking about Pacific rim chain reaction. Wars, floods, earthquakes, famines. Sounds like 2012 might be it. BREAKING: upgraded to 8.9--aftershocks could be even worse. Edited March 11, 2011 by Realistbear
geezer466
Tsunami warning sirens are sounding in Hawaii... Struck at 05.45 GMT so would have thought it would be some hours for a wave to travel the distance.
interestrateripoff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12709755 Asia stock markets and the yen have fallen sharply in response to a tsunami and earthquake in Japan measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale. It struck only minutes before the 0645 GMT close of trading in Tokyo. The dollar briefly gained about 0.5% against the yen to 83.275 yen, before dropping back again. The Nikkei index ended the day some 1.7% lower, but Nikkei futures fell 3% in after-hours trading in Singapore as the scale of damage became apparent. The Tokyo market had already been suffering amid the turmoil in the Middle East, and closed at its lowest level in five weeks. Across Asia other markets also fell. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped some 1.8% following the earthquake, and remained down that much as of 0730 GMT. Been watching the pictures just looks like a hollywood disaster movie. Some terrifying pictures where you can see people driving in cars and water giving them no chance. I wonder what the cost of this will turn out to be. Tsunami warnings across the Pacific from Australia to South America.. Who are the idiots stood on that bridge watching the ships and other flotsam being washed underneath it....... Looking at some of the footage, bridges are often the high point of local elevation and might well be safe places to be (especially if you put yourself over a support rather than a section of span). geezer466
Tsunami warning centre has issued its timed hit warnings. Here Timed to hit Australia from 15.30 Zulu Mentions Sydney and other large cities. New Zealand from around 18.15 Zulu, again mentions the large cities.... Zulu is GMT. The depth of this disaster will be the height of the wave(s) as they cross the Pacific. Some news reports are already saying it is higher than some Pacific islands. ScrewsNutsandBolts
There must be some advantage in a tsunami striking during daylight hours. Of course some people will stand no chance of finding safe ground, but having daylight to give you some warning about where the waves are, and where the high ground is, must help. Looks like a lot of later tsunami strikes may be at dusk or night time. Not good...
noodle doodle
Why bigger? Surely some of the energy will dissipate as it crosses the Pacific, meaning smaller on the other side? depends on the shape of the sea 'shelf'.... tsunamis are fast and shallow as they cross deep water, when they hit shallower water that fast water slows down and builds up in height
