My parents took my nephew there last year on a day trip as they used to do it in the 60's being from London. They were shocked at how awful the place was. Dad said it was always a bit tacky but not threatening like it is now.

I generally wouldn't go to southend on Sea for leisure purposes. Although old Leigh is nice. Southend is no worse than basildump though where I generally try to avoid at all costs.

Go through the town now, and it looks just like East London. It's a dirty, traffic-jammed, noisy, urban mess for the most part. The few nice parts remaining command huge property prices, but what the point is I don't know because you have to travel through the scum areas to get to London or get to work in other parts of Southend - if you can find a job - it's one of the listed blackspots for job shortages

Yes, it's the place that in a recent poll, Southend's homeless said they felt safest in, having been subject to attacks in other parts of the town.

I'm sure the residents of that part of Leigh are delighted at that news

Expect to pay over £180K+ for a small flat above a shop there, and Friday nights it really gets pretty lively with some delightful younger characters yelling and running in and out of the road at chucking out time and indeed earlier

I love the comment that goes into great deal of detail of how its almost impossible to permanently blind a pilot using one of these devices. He seems to miss the point somewhat....

For those of you who doubt the dangers of laser pointers, watch the FAA video on the subject.

Note that permanent damage is almost impossible, with the pointer needing to be about 50ft away and held steady for several seconds. That's not a real issue.

I think at one time in the 60s they were going to extend the Underground past Hainault down to Saaafend, if they reinstate that idea one day you can imagine what will happen to the already inflated property prices in some parts of the town

Its nicer than Jaywick. Its the UK seaside though, its always been crap. Even the so called 'London on the sea' town of Brighton always seems a chav infested hell-hole to me. I guess some smaller places are ok, like Southwold, but 99% of seaside towns are the pits.

YOBS shone lasers into pilots’ faces as they guided the first easyJet plane into Southend Airport.

Police have revealed they are investigating an attempt to dazzle the plane’s captain and first officer, as they prepared to land.

The aircraft was targeted on Sunday night, ahead of Monday’s maiden flight to Belfast.

It was empty apart from its flight crew, but an Aer Lingus Regional aircraft, which landed shortly afterwards and is also believed to have been targeted, was filled with passengers.

I would think it would be almost impossible to even hit the cockpit with one, let alone the eye of the pilot....and he has two of those and two spare.

They could fill them with paint and launch them at jet liners like this one. Once they work, they could go after low flying RAF jets. The RAF and the million dollar missile companies would not want to be shown up by being hit by £100 missiles.

I thought the same, but then if you sweep it around the cockpit it would be distracting if it hits the eyes for even a split second. Who in their right mind wants to blind a pilot anyway? The class 4 laser I use in my lab has no minimum safe distance. I'm guessing most of these laser pens are class 2 which I'm reasonably sure is still powerful enough to dazzle a pilot over the distance of a final approach.

I was once on a KLM flight that had to take off and go around after being lasered flying over the Stockton/Yarm area on the approach to Teesside (on the second attempt it landed in the other direction, approaching over Darlington, to avoid the lasers). The pilot explained on the Tannoy that this is happening "all the time" now. When I later told my sister about it (who at the time was a scheduled airline first officer, but now flies air ambulances), she said that it was a serious and growing issue at many of Britain's regional airports. The only way to catch these thugs is with large numbers of policemen spread out over a wide area, and they are very rarely available.

You seem to have spent a while fantasising over this bizzare project.

Do you seriously think that an RAF jet would be vulnerable to such a half-baked device?

Have you any idea what the g-forces in a typical missile are as it accelerates to full speed?

Something that just blasts off into the air is simple and cheap enough to build, hence the reason you can buy firework rockets for a tenner. However, aiming it at anything, and especially a moving object in mid-air, with any degree of accuracy is a different kettle of fish altogether; hence the reason Saddam's scuds "only" cost around £100k each and still failed to land within 50 miles of their intended target.
