Austin Allegro
Thanks for letting me know Random Harvest is on youtube. I read a mouldering paperback version of it (10p from a charity shop) and really enjoyed it. Mr Hilton was a really good writer.
happy_renting
I'm All Right Jack The Lavender Hill Mob A Matter Of Life Or Death all good oldies edit to add : The original St Trinians was pretty funny too. The recent remake was dire.
'Bart'
A Matter Of Life Or Death Definitely. I'd love for this to be cleaned up, restored and released on Blu-ray. I have the DVD and the print is very messy at the start, lots of dust and muck over the opening titles. It settles down after a while but it's not the best print by a long chalk. Austin Allegro
I couldn't believe Blimp was made in 1944. The colour photography is so good it looks more like the mid sixties. If you like Powell and Pressburger films, 'A Canterbury Tale' is quite good. I also like 'Tunes of Glory', best enjoyed with a glass or two of malt whisky. Aye, did I mention that Blimp had just been remastered ? A brilliant film. 'Bart'
I'm getting The Railway Children on Blu-ray for my birthday. Picture quality is supposed to be excellent. Fingers crossed.

The recent remake was dire. Passport to Pimlico is one of my favourites. So much so I tried to dig out the locations when I lived in London (it was actually filmed in Lambeth, sarf of the river). Most of it has been demolished but you can pick out the railway viaduct and some buildings. I rather the like the gritty "northern" kitchen sink dramas of 50/60's Saturday Night, Sunday Morning Room at the Top Spring and Port Wine
Tankus
Great dust in the eye film. On paper Zula Dawn should have been a worthy sequel with the actors, budget and the historical accuracy. prequel ..surely
Mrs Bear
Whistle Down The Wind. Mr B recorded this a while back - he'd never seen it and we watched the other night. He was riveted. Alan Bates fantastic as the criminal. Anyone who's not seen it, it's early 60s B&W with Hayley Mills, set in rural oop north, but totally unsentimental. Nuggets Mahoney
More of a late Saturday night film back in the Golden Age but excellent viewing at any time... The nearest thing to a British Western ever made Sunday evening - best Brit Horror film... Early sixties b&w British films are often fantastically well filmed with good location work. Whistle Down the Wind is one of these. It's a really good story as well. Bruce Banner
I watched Melancholia last night. Interesting film, beautifully produced, kept reminding me of On the Beach. Now On the Beach, original of course, is a film that's not shown often these days.

Bruce Banner
Have you seen the 2000 (TV movie) remake? It's actually pretty decent (IMO). Yes, I have. It was okay, but the original was a classic that used to scare the life out of me as a child. Was there anything that Nevil Shute couldn't do well? I think Melancholia would be right up your street.
