They had Red Ken, Boris, the green (who seemed to be best pals with Ken) and the Lib dem ex police bloke.

They all did their speil and Red Ken said he wanted to get Londoners cheaper electric - transport for London buys it at half the rate people do so he wants to get an energy cooperative to save people £120 a year.

My first thoughts were it sounds like a vote winner, unless his energy co-op staff go on strike for more money ...

that's probably because TfL don't have 10 million meters to be read and 10 million individual credit ratings to track and potential non payers to chase, i imagine

that kind of suggestion sounds like socialising private losses to me

It sounds like more total bollix from Ken.

I don't understand

a.) why London needs a mayor

b.) what they do

c.) why it costs so much

d.) how these two/three idiots got anywhere near being in charge of anything

I'm really surprised this has never kicked up a credible independent. Would be easier to start here than with Westminster.

This has nothing to do with reading meters ect these schemes are already happening Which? is part of one that has signed up 250.000 people but has got flack for asking the energy companies for a £40 referral fee. Other schemes can be found from a number of non profit organisations the idea is when they have signed up enough people they like large companies negotiate wholesale rates for electricty and gas which are much cheaper than you as an individual pays.

But how do they work out who's using how much electricity?

There has to an overhead (and quite large) for reading, calculating, billing and supporting 250,000 customers vs 1.

I'm sure they can make it look much cheaper to start with, but eventually it will cost nearly the same. The only difference would be efficiencies and profit margins over the various sources.

From whar i remember (a few years since i lived in Blighty) but Ken stood and won as an independent, the Labour candidate was Dobson

What's this doing on national news, why am I expected to care who runs the city council in London?

The Mayor of London is elected by more people than anyother western European politician bar the President of France.

London has a bigger population than Scotland and Wales.

Boris Johnson got over 1.1million votes last time - Cameron won his seat on less than 30,000?

Its far more important to most English people who runs London than who runs Scotland and Wales - and we get enough Alex Salmond to last a lifetime. Cos London provides so much of the wealth that bankrolls everywhere else!

a.) why London needs a mayor

'Cos it's decided by the London parliament. A body funded by the whole UK to employ 650 people into central London. So all 650 of them experience London's local circumstances, problems and needs at first hand, and can properly represent London's interests.

The rest of England has no representatives. We just get to pay for the London institutions: the parliament, the prestigious parts of the civil service, the 'national' cultural centres, and the knock-on effects of the high-pay, high-value service industries that cluster around them.

Londons current population is still less than it was in 1945 yet they seemed to manage back then without a a mayor.

So basically this is local news but because all media types seem to live in London we all get to hear about it.

It`s a different voting system not first past the post but transferred second choice votes.

I vote as first choice for fred the shred, no luck, my second vote is for nick the p***k, no luck, my vote has been a waste of time, do you get it.

Read Andrew Gilligans blog at the Telegraph.

This is another one of Ken's impossible promises that he has no intention of keeping.
