The Masked Tulip Posted July 29, 2011 Share Posted July 29, 2011 HALF of Welsh businesses fear they will not survive the next year if the economy does not pick up dramatically.Worrying research suggests that nearly two thirds of firms are not expecting a full economic recovery for two years or more. And a leading Welsh economist last night warned of more uncertainty if unemployment levels follow growth trends that have seen a near stagnation in the UK economy this year. The study, by business insurance firm QBE, also found that 65% of businesses in Wales expect it to be two years or more before a full economic recovery, with 36% not expecting a turnaround for three years or more. Respected Aberdare-born financier and economist Gerry Holtham, said he was concerned that unemployment data – which has shown growth in employment – might start to reflect sluggish output statistics which are showing snail-paced growth in GDP. And such high costs, disproportionate with what they should be. Still all those extra costs count as increased GDP don't they - only if you suffer from total myopia. They also need to build the M4 relief motorway and get rid of the chaos that is the M4 through Newport. Then perhaps we can compete with England on a level playing field. Actually, the problem is obvious - the M4 toll bridge charges people to go into Wales, but lets them leave for free... which is bass-ackwards. Despite their ubiquity, my guess would be, they don't employ enormous numbers. If they're anything like the UK lorry trailer 'manufacturers' left they won't do much beyond bolting together a load of parts made by someone else. Incidentally a big Ifor Williams dealer near me - been there decades - went bust not long ago so. I guess no new Range Rover Sport = no buying of new horsebox. If it wasn't for the Welsh language.....there wouldn't be a Wales. From the language came the culture. It made Wales different to it's neighbours despite centuries of attempting to kill off the language. Without it, you may as well call it an English county like Cumbria. But it's not, it's a nation with it's own unique language and literature and culture. If you don't agree with that you're either ignorant or somebody who has moved here with a coloniser's mindset or possibly both. Simple as that.
