Exhaust sawn off by thieves

Friend woke up this morning to find someone had used an angle grinder and sawn off part of his exhaust including the catalytic unit. This is an oldish Honda and will be expensive to fix , maybe more than car is (was) worth. He told the police and they said the whole street had been similarly done, mainly vans apparently.  Thought I'd seen it all but stumped as to what this about. Assuming the PM in the catalytic thing is the target but has anyone any idea or seen this before?

Nothing new at all. The catalytic convertor has platinum as a catalyst, that is what the thieves are after.

One garage I worked at had the catalytic exhausts nicked by being sawn off the minibuses. New ones were fitted, then promptly nicked again. As all the nuts and bolts were new, they could be undone quietly. That gave them the advantage of nicking brand new and easily sold on exhausts.

Smart or what?

Fits some other anecdotes ive heard recently of Romanian/EE gang behaviour, they'll target an area in a couple of transits and are back across the border within a matter of hours.

Similar anecdote: these gangs are digging up live wires along the m/ways armed with grinders, they can roll up thick long  chunks bundle it in the vans and be gone in minutes, ruthless, efficient and seriously dangerous and theyre gone well before the traffic wombles are on the scene. Even when they get caught they are not on any database, no fixed address police are powerless

The underground was a major target for this, wait for the electricity to go off then cut through the copper.  easily make 20k a night in scrap.

slap on the wrists if you are caught.

just keep the electricity on then!

that slap on the wrists is quite a bit more powerful.
