You are lucky they haven't restricted the 60 down to 40 like they have on roads like that around here. I and other drivers don't pay attention though and still do 60 if the road is clear.

Honestly can't understand how someone can go on a public forum to announce that they routinely break the law and are proud of it.

This is all by design...the housing could be built in locations where it was needed to reduce the need for folks to commute so far but this is prohibited.  The plebs waste away their lives driving through or train travelling through the green fields around London absentmindedly gazing through the window at the large houses with their spacious grounds and country side views...

I assume they are just too tired to get agitated about the situation - they are like zombies...

Thank you but apparently I am an apologist for BTLer's and like monopolies and a cabbie to boot  according to Locke :lol:

I wouldn't drive today Locke the drugs or alcohol are still in your system !!

Haha, I find the term cringey and I've only seen it used by cabbies, who have an inordinately inflated sense of self importance.

Straight edge m8 ;)

What do you ride? I have an SV650 K4

It is a craft and aptly titled Roadcraft - have you seen a police car or a fire engine attending an incident at high speed in a busy area making maximum progress and yet safe progress - I admire that and continue to learn in a small way how to emulate them.

About 4 bystanders are run over by police cars every year.

Ha ha fellow biker  - I can suffer from the ailment that cabbies do !

BMW R1200RS - my second ridden through the winter , the electronic aids make it feel so much safer. I fell in love with the boxer engine about 4 years ago nice torque and unusual beat probably why you like your SV?

What constitutes a bystander ?

My first reaction was only 4 actually - harsh as it may seem

They are also making a value judgement when driving at speed - no speeding fines but if something like that happens normal rules apply. I applaud them and thank them for taking that responsibility on - most people wouldn’t

Isn't there evidence that the growth in rail travel has 'hit the buffers' so to speak? (http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/24832I/passenger-rail-usage-2016-17-q4.pdf). It will never double in next 25 years, without collossal investment in new lines and trains, and a substantial decrease in ticket costs.

A rise of only 0.8% in rail passenger journeys in 2016/7 compared to 4-7% in previous years. I suspect it is why the East Coast franchise has been given up early, not just the Network Rail engineering shortcomings which have been blamed.

Car travel has possibly never been cheaper.

There was nothing wrong with it when it was being run in public ownership if anything it was doing great!

Network Rail is still in public ownership. Is it a good advert for how to run a railway?

Under British Rail, investment was poor and frquently misdirected towards the wrong projects. Under private operators, passenger numbers have shot up - a real success story.

I do, because you are publically exceeding the limit on the road with everyone else. Its a fact that in a lot of areas the speed limits have simply been set wrong. Tell me why on a rural road with no houses that has ALWAYS been a 60 zone since the 1940s we get to 2017 and for no good reason other than to annoy people and encourage them to use a bypass instead (probably) they take it to 40. I still do 60 and so does just about everyone else. If I do get stuck behind someone who is doing 40 I overtake them. More power to the people. BTW: There are no pedestrians to get in your way, before you ask.

Most passengers are commuters. Over the last 25 years financialisation has concentrated the jobs into a smaller number of urban areas while simultaneously pushing up house prices meaning people are having to live further from work if they want to buy. House price inflation pushed people onto the trains, not privatisation.

I wonder why pedestrians and cyclists don't want to use rural routes that cars are illegally driving on at 60mph. Hmm, real brainteaser that one.

I like the system in Guernsey where back lanes in the countryside are limited to 15mph with priority for pedestrians, horses and cyclists. Humans should be able to go out and about.

There never were any bicycles on that road in all the years I drove on it when it was 60. If that's your argument for reducing it to 40 then why should 99.8% of the road users (motorists) suffer for just a few cyclists. That's the same mentality as taking a car lane out to put in a bus lane as they do in big cities. These schemes should only put in if the road is widened to take the cycle or bus lane.

99.8% of road users are motorists because since the 1950s planners have almost exclusively focused on making the public space suitable for motorists. Make it grim and dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists and guess what? People don't walk or cycle. The opposite is also true - make it safe and pleasant for people to walk or cycle and people will do so.

Do you ? Massive hub of economic success isn’t it ?

Humans can go out and about - I walk, Cycle, motorcycle and drive. I have no problem finding places to enjoy any of those modes

what I don’t want to do is impose my choice as a minority on anyone like the cycling mafia appears to want to do

I agree with 20mph limits around schools and 60mph on suitable country roads

Your salary and way of life are supported by modern transport methods - not backward tax havens with peculiar little rules that being small they can indulge in

Why not try living there ? Oh your not an multi millionaire RR Phantom owner - rather ironic ???

The Isle of Man on the other hand which is also a small island tax haven has some roads with no speed limits. It's just not backwards and actually has a real economy.

Where I live we have a mini TDF almost every weekend, lots of lycra louts flouting the traffic rules and being angry at law abiding motorists. Oh and I ride bikes, both push and motor.

I know I have sampled those roads on TT week - happy days ?? my favourite Lycra lout story is being up town with my wife in the West End and it was a Lycra w***** gathering blocking the roads - whilst we were going to the theatre in my ‘ Sunday car’ some goon tried to block our path and then put his sweaty little hand on the bonnet of my car !!

My wife calmly lowered the window and explained if said Lycra lout didn’t remove his paw immediately it would probably be his last act on this planet....

Let me get this right - 60mph speed limits on rural lanes are essential for the UK's continued economic success? Last time I checked the UK has a motorway and A road network which transports goods between ports, distribution centres and towns and cities. You don't see many HGVs doing 60mph on single track roads in the ar5e end of nowhere, it's mostly just impatient car drivers.

Guernsey has 2 types of rural roads - the type that connect settlements where cars can go fast and the type that are just back lanes where cars are limited to 15mph. It seems appropriate to differentiate the two.

The point being made is that roads set their own speed limits, sane drivers don't do 60 down a road that not suitable for 60, the same as a sane cyclist won't jump a red light at a pedestrian crossing or a sane pedestrian won't step off the kerb without looking cause they're busy on their phone.

The Guernsey 15 limit roads are little more than glorified tracks so the limit fits the road, here the speed limits were originally set by the scientific 85th percentile rule (Google it), now they're set for political/financial reasons.

There's plenty of heavy traffic using the rural road network. Reduce a limit from 60 to 40 and the lorry limit goes from 50 to 40.

Blind bends, gradient change, rural traffic, animals, overhanging vegetation, narrowing road space. Stuff awesome car and bike users don't need to be worried about. Apparently.

But, of course, the run-o-the-mill car user and motorcyclist's journey has to be quicker. Because.... er.... it just should be OK! Get out of my way! Cos!
