maverick73
The Resolution Foundation’s Chief Economist Matt Whittaker agrees that tinkering around the edges will not tackle the housing crisis. He said: “Rather than announcing a range of micro schemes the sound good but all too often do little more than stoke demand, he should take the steps necessary to make a radical difference on housing supply.” November Budget 2017 Supply is overpriced... it drops until demand is stroked once more... unfortunately local demand is underpinned by.... ? jiltedjen
This budget we witness the death of the Conservative party on a short and medium term time-line. they have to be more drastic than their own party would ever allow. too full of boomers bankers and new money neoliberals. lots of headline stories, like tears in the rain. no real effect. When she deregulated them she probably thought she was making a shrewd step....roll on 40 years...the bankers own 2 generations and can magic up money to buy any politician. Where did remainer, wife of a financier, May use to work? This childless lady is not for turning...her back on her paymasters. What their game is,is up for debate. Imho...Magic beans are no good unless you can make them worth more than Heinz. All IMHO.
DarkHorseWaits-NoMore
Get ready to update the 'Prop-Tastic' thread after Wednesday's budget. The media is full of it today, the surfs are being primed. House prices rising for years... *silence is deafening*. Funny how these 'big policy initiatives' are required when it looks like prices might start falling. spyguy
Tax or clawback of land with planning permission. Use it or lose it, aimed at land hoarding. Oh dear. Builders have finally been caught out.

macca13
Driverless cars by 2021, training courses for builders, interested to hear we have to import our bricks.. ffs and I quote Philip Hammond (Andrew marr show) ”if we throw money at housing we will drive the prices higher” “we help people with schemes like help to buy”.. wtf, he just said if you throw money at it you inflate prices.. ? then said we helped by throwing money at it.. unless he is going to stop help to buy? Yay ? otherwise that statement is a massive contradiction!

How much more will a brick cost when imported under WTO rules? It will be a convenient excuse for builders as costs rise, especially when the pound starts to slide. If IRs remain low, I guess new business could borrow to invest and take up the resulting brick supply gap... eventually.

jiltedjen
So the announcements today, don’t go far enough with building especially with the time-lag, and especially considering that the targets are never met anyway. the conservatives have given leadership away for 30 years. too little too late, now to convince the misses to actually join labour also, not that labour will sort the situation out, but the conservatives have thrown our generation to the dogs. Bricks n' mortar
Bricks are Heavy, was an album by 90's grungesters L7. It's also the reason we won't be importing boatloads of the things. The brick companies knew this, when demand evaporated in 2009. So the workers lost their jobs, but the factories were merely locked up, not demolished, in most cases. I pulled these, from a google search for "brickworks" and "mothballed"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-36722295http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/local-news/forty-jobs-go-brickworks-set-4828514http://www.hemeltoday.co.uk/news/the-reason-why-90-year-old-bovingdon-brickworks-was-forced-to-mothball-site-and-cut-staff-1-7633346http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/fire-mothballed-brick-manufacturing-site-5836622

Everything is fine in the land of bountiful opportunity. There will be an awful lot in the future thanks to the apprenticeship levy, it's already happening, replace proper (older) staff with a 4 day a week teenager just to claw back the ridiculous tax imposed, the preferential treatment of these kids is akin to discrimination IMO
