rollover
Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard met with President Bashar al-Assad during a secret, four-day trip to Syria. "When the opportunity arose to meet with him, I did so because I felt that it's important that if we profess to truly care about the Syrian people, about their suffering, then we've got to be able to meet with anyone that we need to if there is a possibility that we can achieve peace," the Hawaiian congresswoman said. "Whatever you think about President Assad, the fact is that he is the president of Syria," she said. "In order for any peace agreement, in order for any possibility of a viable peace agreement to occur there has to be a conversation with him." "My commitment is on ending this war that has caused so much suffering to the Syrian people, to these children, to these families, many of whom I met on this trip," Gabbard said. "(The Syrians) asked me, 'Why are the United States and its allies supporting these terror groups which are destroying Syria, when it was al Qaeda that attacked the United States on 9/11, not Syria.' I didn't have an answer to them." The US government claims it does not fund these groups and only provides assistance to so-called moderate rebels. However, Gabbard said the Syrians she met with told her that there are no moderate rebels in the country. CNN

The strikes against the designated targets were confirmed by impartial monitoring means. Sukhoi-30SM and Sukhoi-35S fighter jets from the Hmeymim air base provided protection for the Russian bombers. A Russian analysis of the psyche of the people. Look at the history, Russia has never been a democracy. They expect their leaders to steal (and assume its normal all over the world) and be murderously powerful and they have never seen anything different. They misjudge Western democratic liberalism as effeminate weakness, and they despise it.. Errol
4 hours ago, Peter Hun said: Syria is ten times worse than Libya in death toll and damage. Agreed. Largely due to the Western powers and Qatar/Saudi Arabia backing the rebellion from day 1, providing weapons and training to facilitate the killing and other odious activities. This is before we get into the issue of the US backing/creating and arming ISIS. Russia has been the only one actually trying to end the conflict. I see no reason why with Trump in charge, Russia and the US can't work together to restore order to the entire region.

rollover
Russia's Lavrov backs renewal of U.N.-led Syria talks Russia said on Sunday that it supports the continuation of Syria peace talks under United Nations auspices, long-running negotiations which had been thrown into doubt by separate, Moscow-backed peace talks launched last month. They have now been rescheduled for February 20, diplomats have told Reuters. The UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said he had decided to delay them to take advantage of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition in Astana, Kazakhstan, hosted by Moscow, Ankara and Tehran. But the talks spotlighted sharp differences between Moscow and Tehran over the possible future participation of the United States and also excluded Gulf states, despite their major role in the proxy war in Syria that has drawn in the entire region. Iran, whose relations with Washington have nosedived since Trump became president, opposes any U.S. involvement. Reuters
