Boughtin95
Could this be the way to avoid paying the ludicrous prices currently being asked for a home? This lovely Log Cabin for a mere £10,999.00 (including VAT)! All you need is somewhere to put it, family or friends garden perhaps? http://www.screwfix.com/prods/69022/Outdoor-Buildings/Log-Cabins/Helsinki-Log-Cabin#

Stars
Land with planning permission is what is expensive at the moment. The difference between that and a plot with an already built house isn't much bigger than the cost of building it. As if permission to use the land is somehow seperate from land and its price. What do you think you are paying for when you pay for land, if not permission to use it? The fact is, the problem that needs to be solved isn't solved by making the physical structure of houses cheaply Edited April 12, 2010 by Stars
Mr Punter
Drainage and services £10k. Can't live in uninsulated shed as would freeze / burn to death. Kitchen / bathroom would be nice as well. Why not live in a tent? I think £80k is about the minimum cost to build a house, or £10k plus £800 - £1000 per metre.

If you were only paying for the actual service provided by the house, rather than the house+ the faux service of land, then it would be easy to do for less than
cells
You can claim VAT back if it is to be your only home, so that’s about £9.4k. Too small though at about 40sq meters, need double that min really. So about £20k. Problem is, add foundations, connections in and out and your up to about £30k. I would also double this as I guess it will not last more than 30 years. So that’s £60k A simple 110sq meter 4 bed with garage costs only £70k to build all in (exc land)

However this log cabin would probably be a decent extension or summer house or granny annex. connecting services would not cost £10k, more like £3k tops. If it is an extension perhaps less than £1k to connect upto the main house.

If building 1 REALLY NICE house with, a double garage and a pool and stuff then maybe. Bargain bucket houses, built en-mass, with of-the-shelf fittings would cost half that to build, max. Cold in winter hot in summer. Condensation, and let's not forget the wonderful caravan dwellers wick effect. For the same money you could build with natural materials - oak, hazel, straw, lime, earth. Been there and actually done it.
